Well, Wednesday I was in urgent care dehydrated due to too many bm's & also strep throat & an ear infection. (I take my last levaquin today & my ear is still bugging me.) The thing is, I haven't poo'd since Wed. & now I am so constipated!!! They put steroids & anti-nausea meds in the IV, and I am also on antibiotics & prednisone & acid reducer (they think maybe now an ulcer in my stomach, too?) plus my Darvocet & azulfidine. Is it the meds causing the constipation? There is so much pressure & need to go.... grrrr.... Should I do an enema? How long should I wait? Now I think I am getting an UTI because it burned when (& has burned ever since) I peed. I can't even afford the gas to head to urgent care again, so I need to give myself some relief until I see my PCP on Tuesday. Any ideas on how to give me some comfort would be so greatly appreciated. confused

So sorry for your misery, Huckie! Man, what a haul...it could be your meds causing the constipation, especially if they gave you any narcotics, plus those anti-nausea meds can have that effect. How about eating some stewed prunes or something? I know, sounds gross, but it might help "move things along." Push the light foods like pureed soups and clear liquids; these will also help ease the ol' fire-pee, as I like to call it. There's some OTC stuff called Azo that can relieve the pain with urination. You should get a urine culture and analysis at your next visit for that. Take some walks in the fresh air to see if that will get things moving along. Hopefully one of these things will give you some relief!

I am in so much pain, I am cramping up my belly so bad. I was thinking of doing my daily yoga, but I just can't move well, it hurts! Definitely not going outside (it's -5), and I don't like moving much. Anything else besides prunes? My husband was thinking of doing an enema..? Not yet?

I am so sorry! That is VERY painful and happens to me almost every time when I get out of the hospital. I do Milk of Magnesia and that is what my gastro would tell me to do. This is a CALM one and you may do okay on it! I do a Milk of Magnesia cleans. It is not as bad as it sounds. It cleanses you. Let me know. But yes clear liquids for sure.......... At least until you go and feel better!

Keep an eye on it and call your Doctor if you are not better on Monday- I wouldn't wait.

Most likely, it is all of the medications.

Good Luck!

The Darvocet I was on before when I was have 80 zillioin bm's a day, so I don't think it's the Darvocet. Could it be the prednisone? My husband called his dad who is a MA & said to do an few enemas, that it would be bad for me to have a hard stool right now. Is that true?

I think you shoudl call your doctor and ask what you should do. This is begining to sound like it is beyound self management.

How about a suppository? That usually works for me. I usually eat very light-mostly broths and I bake or microwave apples without skin and put a little cinnamon on them. I eat the sunkist Ones prunes and mushy veggies are good too-like overcooked zucchini. No breads or potatoes or meat....I also find soaking in a hot tub helps. I also add benefiber 3x per day and take 4 senekot tablets at night.

I just had rectal surgery and it was so hard coming out but the suppository worked in about 15 min. The pressure is gone now, too. Those pain meds can do a job on your bowels.

I am always constipated anyway, so I really sympathize. Hope you feel better soon!
36 year old female. Dx'd and undx'd a few times. Was just redx'd again 04/2007.
History of rectal abscesses and fistulas (28 surgeries including abscess I & D, exploratory surgeries, 2 C-ton drains and 1 fistula plug) Count does not include self bursting abscesses.
1st Remicade infusion 6/5/07.  Lots of joint pain, and a new fistula since the 2nd infusion 6/19.
Praying I'll get better soon so we can have a baby.

The UTI, you were on one of the big gun antibiotics so I would be more concerned about your gut right now..........the idea for the UTI OTC med was good for the burning with urination.........it will turn your urine orange.........I mean really orange.

I would drink as much fluids as you can and try to walk and see if you can pass gas and get rid of some of the bloating.

I agree with calling your physician if you are not feeling better shortly in case you are obstructed.  Darvocet may cause constipation.  But you have gone to the extreme here very quickly.

Keep posting an dknow we are here for you.  Gentle hugs to ya.

I did 2 enemas, but not much luck. I started vomiting a little with the second one. Was able to keep down an ensure & a little bit of potatoes with turkey gravy. So I am sure I am fine. I am just so weak & crampy & bloated. The noises coming out of my belly are something else, but that must mean that things are moving. I hope I can go soon. I am going to try to do some simple yoga right now. I just feel like I am in a fog again, but I am sure it is way to early to be obstructed. It's only been 4 days. How long of not going before you worry about obstruction?

Blockages in the large intestine usually occur gradually while blockages in the small
intestine can happen fairly fast.

If  your stomach has been churning, and you have been  overwhelmed  all day  with abdominal cramps that leave you sweaty and nauseated. And the day goes on, the cramps got worse and by this  evening, you vomit and  absolutely no bowel movement after all you have tried, you need to contact your physician. You may have a obstruction or even a partial obstruction.  I am not a professional but it does seem you are very ill today and waiting to long to talk with your physician is not smart either.

Hope you get pain relief soon.  You cannot work if you are in pain and are nauseated.
Gentle Hugs.

I have to work. I have to. My husband is laid off & I have been missing so much work I am afraid I will lose my job. I have 2 kids. What do I do? I vomited today, but not tonight. I keep eating hoping it will push through. I don't feel a lot of pressure in my rectum, but in my belly. I am sure it will be fine.... I will post in the am. Maybe I will try another enema...

If you are obstructed, even a partial obstruction, eating and enemas are not the way to go. When I get a partial obstruction I go on fluids only for a couple of days and then keep to a low residue diet for a while after that. To me the severe cramping and the vomiting point to a possible obstruction or partial obstruction. Be careful, definitely call the doctor. I hope you feel better soon.

I don't think I am obstructed. I was going to do another enema this morning but I did finally go a little, even if a little bit. I am still having cramps & nausea so I don't think I can make it to work. Going to see if there is anything pressing they need from me, if I have to go in, I will. But since I went a little, I think calling the doc is unnecessary. No vomiting, though, so I think I am ok.
