I was diagnosed june 07 and since then have noticed as time goes on that  i seem to go into a flare right around the same time as my period (like that alone isn't enough) i am guessing it has something to do with hormones. Anyone else have that issue? As well i notice the week after my period i tend to get a yeast infection which i am guessing is from the imuran since i never had this problem before my dr. suggested pro biotics or wait it out ( no thanks) so any suggestion on a good probiotic or something else that may help?

I currently take 50/100 mg imuran
500mg salofalk 4 times a day
b complex one a day
fish pills (4  a day)
and started just a probiotic a month and half ago started at one a day but going up to 3 to see if it may help with and increase.

thanks for the help!

yes it's very common for IBD symptoms to exacerbate during that time of the month...If you take a good probiotic daily whether you're flaring or in remission this will stop the yeast infections and aid with IBD symptoms as well...the one I use is called primadophilus reuteri made by natures way it has guaranteed intestinal release, aids with lactose intolerance, high cholesterol and vaginal health...only 1/day is needed and it's very affordable.

I am newly diagnosed (January '08), and have been having symptoms at least since last May. I feel near-normal most of the time, but I have developed abdominal pain and a high fever pre-menstrually on four occassions. For me it tends to come on five or six days before my period, and last anywhere from one day to about a week.

Hi HappyheadBrokenbottom,
I don't necessarily go into a flare, but I can usually tell the day before I start my period. My gut starts acting up & I usually always get the big D!

good luck & take care!

Happens to me too.  I might be almost okay all month long, but as soon as that time of the month comes, so does the big "d".

Years ago, before I had any CD symptoms, I had the same problem, D every month. My doc then said it was because of a hormone that is released to cause muscles to contract, helping the uterus. The side effect of it is D. I never heard that before or since, but it made sense to me!
diagnosed 11/06, solving the mystery of years of on/off abdominal pain. No more "it's just a virus". 33f with 2 boys, a lovable dog, and a wonderful husband. 150 mg Imuran, bowel resection 9/07, healing well and feeling well. Entocort 9mg.

I was having such bad symptoms around that time every month and during flare it was nearly intolerable. I was put on Seasonale which is the birth control pill that gives you 4 periods a year to minimize the monthly flaring. I have not had a period since and though I do have looser bowels its not bad d and I get some cramps but nothing that bad. Every time I am supposed to get my period it doesn't even come and the OBGYN says thats ok.
I use a Probiotic called Primal Defense, I get it at the health food store. I used the acidoplhilis pearls also and those were nice. I also started adding yogurt into my diet by adding it to smoothies etc.
Even before my dx I would get sick to my stomach around my period but with the CD it was unbearable. I am so glad this pill works for me

ME TOO. Frustrating! I should be starting my period on Monday and feel all crampy and bloated right now. It's a week away and yet I feel like my insides are flipping out. I have been feeling better since I started Entacort and Pentasa a month ago but now that I'm starting my period next week, I feel double the cramps, back pain, and I'm so very tired.

Me, too! I notice worse pain & weight loss about a week before my period. I have not had a DX yet, so I cannot say it's CD, although I think it is. This is very interesting to me, because I thought maybe it was just my period getting painful (I have ovarian cysts, too.).

You know the guys are reading this thread and have no idea what we are talking about. They think they do cause they get the cramping with the big D, but seriously guys, it's different and really not fun. And you wonder why we get a little cranky around that time of the month?

Oh I think they know, right off the bat happyhead wrote...

They're probably just glad they don't have the extra headache that we have on top of having CD....and I'm willing to bet the CD men are alot more understanding to their wives/girlfriends during that time of the month compared to the average male.

That's true, CD guys are probably a lot more understanding about this topic than most other men.

A woman I work with, who does not even have Crohn's, has the same problem too. I think a lot of women in general probably get this. It makes sense if you think about it - when you go into labor and it often triggers diarrhea. It's the body's way of clearing things out to make way for the birth. I think some of the same hormones kick in with our cycles.

Yup, for sure, many women that don't have IBD or even IBS notice major changes during that time of the month....I never did before CD myself, and even after CD I didn't have much interferance that way until about 5 yrs ago, it was one of a few reasons why my GI suspected I may have also developed IBS on top of having crohns.

Thank you all for replying, it is nice to know i am not going crazy lol. I have to say my boyfriend is pretty good, i was diagnosed 9 months after we started dating which made it a bit easy cause he was there when i was going through the tests and after i got the results he was the one on the internet searching for stuff and he is the one who found this forum! lol he also looks into my supplements for me. Its like having a mini doctor at home doing research and finding new stuff lol. But when it was coming to the things i mentioned in the post i know he can't really relate or give input! :-)

Glad to hear you have a great support system via your boyfriend...it's always so sad to hear about those who don't feel they have anyone (especially in person, friends, family, ect) that are supportive.

And this is definitely a top-notch internet support group, I've been to many and this ones' the best.

God i can relate to so much to you guys. Week before and during period is the worse. I also have cysts on my ovaries. I have noticed like last month that period was just about unbearable but this one this month i knew it was coming but surprised when i got it. Wasnt too bad. But last year 5 hospital stays either had my period or was just about to get it when i was admitted to the hospital. The burning and itching in the but is usually worse around that time as well. I hope to go on the pill but doctors want to wait till im off steriod for good.

Humira, sol medrol, pentasa
