Has anybody tried VSL#3? It is a probiotic with 450billion live bacteria. I have been using homemade kefir for quite a while and been very successful with it and a low-carb (Makers) diet. I am trying to improve my health further and to start eating normaly again. please let me know if you or someone you know has tries VSL#3. Or if there are any GOOD studies of VSL #3 causing remission in normal crohn's patients.

I take it and it seems to help. It doesn't come close to "fixing" me, but it seems to make a difference. I had tried the high quality type that I got from nature stores, but they never made any difference. VSL#3 does, I think.

Here's a link regarding research on VSL, just scroll to the top of the page when it loads in, to read the article from the beginning.

I have been on VSL#3 for about a month or so, and even though I still have diarrhea every day, I am going at least 50% less (about 4-6 x/day instead of 8-12!). Keep in mind I do not have a diagnosis yet...but I have tried almost every medication in the book and this "medicinal food" is the only thing that seems to have had an impact. The only downside is it's pretty expensive.

My GI swears by VSL-3, says he has had many Crohns patients who have shown marked improvement on it. I have used some other probiotics in the past and not seen a real benefit (I have fairly mild disease, well managed on 6mp.) So I began VSL-3 about 6 weeks ago at his urging and I would say I have somewhat fewer min-flares. I'd rate it as moderately helpful, but it may be more effective in more severe disease. I do know that it is the only probiotic with a record (I think two) of clinical trials showing symptom alleviation. So I'll see how it works longer term, but I tend to come down on the side of the "can't hurt and probably helps some" side in the probiotic debate. Not a cure, not the only med you need, but most likely a useful adjunct to other therapies.

I tried VSL#3 the unflavored packets and my symptoms got so much worse.  Turns out I couldn't tolerate the corn starch additive to the VSL.  I was so sick with mucus and loud stomach rumbles.  I stopped using it and within 48 hrs my stomach calmed down.  I have tried the VSL capsules and didn't have this problem.

I've been taking VSL#3 capsules for almost a month, and it's had a wonderful effect.  Generally, I don't have strong symptoms, but I was starting to have gas and not so great BMs.  After the first couple of days I noticed a change, and since then it's been "just logs". :-)  If you can afford it, it's definitely worth a try.

At what stores can you but VSL 3?  I'll try anything.

Go to their website (google VSL#3) and they have a store locater there. If nothing comes up in your area, you might try a larger city near you. If that doesn't work, call their 800 number--you can order it directly.

I've also been told that any "better pharmacy" can order this for you, too.
