Hi Lauren,

How much warning did you have before things got really serious with your Humira reaction? I remember you said your mother was with you at the time and was able to call help (an ambulance, wasn't it?). Would you have been able to get help had you been at home on your own, or would you have been in a potentially fatal situation had your mother not been there?

I had reactions to the Humira but had them in the hospital and they were there to assist me quickly. My experience was the first reaction I would have had time to call for help. But with each reaction the symptoms came on stronger and quicker. According to my doc that is common with all allergic reactions.

Kristen, that is why I am asking Lauren if she would have been all right had she been alone. You were in hospital. You would have been able to get help. A person who injects at home is in a different situation.

If Lauren's throat swelled shut and she wouldn't have been able to get help, then I worry that perhaps none of us should be alone when we inject Humira, just in case something like that happens.

Ivy,

Well I first took humira when i was with my mom and she noticed my face and neck breaking out. I got pretty itchy too. I tried to shrug it off because i was going to look at a house i was thinking of possibly buying. After looking at the house I noticed I was not feeling better, i was getting the worse headaceh of my life, too. I also got muscle aches, shaking, blue fingernails, and the rash was spreading. I was on the way home with my husband when my throat actually started to swell up. It was a good thing I told him about it really quickly because after that I seemed to go in and out of consciousness- by then he was already whisking me away to the ER.

Fortunately for me I was ok but I worry that someday, it might not be that way for someone! Luckily my throat swelled up slowly and then when it got bad I was at the ER. I think it's always smart to have someone around that can take you to the ER or dial 911 if needed.

Unfortunately because of this my doctor has cut off the humira and doesnt want to do remicade either. One thing that will probably make you feel better is that I react to a lot of medicines pretty badly. None as serious as humira, but i have a sensitive system

i'd be glad to answer any other questions! lauren

Thanks, Lauren. That does answer my question. At least you had some warning. Still... that was a very scary experience and yes, I can completely understand you trying to ignore the rash and only really starting to get alarmed once the reaction started to get very severe.

I'm waiting - and waiting and waiting - to start Humira, and they've told me that, once I start the drug, they wouldn't make me wait around to see if I reacted. I thought about you and thought that maybe that wasn't such a good policy.
