Hello all-

I just had a C-scopy that confirmed I have active disease. I had a baby about a yr ago and am still breastfeeding her. My GI wants me to wait until I wean her to put me on Pentasa. (Personally, I'd rather not take anything, but I am having symptoms...better safe than sorry?) I've heard from others that Pentasa is ok to take while breastfeeding. And I've also heard of women being able to safely take medicines and wean down to one or two feedings a day (which I'm already at) - then because it's such a low amount, the drugs don't effect the baby. Is/has anyone been on meds while breastfeeding and have anything to suggest?? I just really am not ready to wean her completely and neither is she.

(Sorry if this has been posted before, the baby's crying and I had to type it in fast!)

Thanks a bunch!!

only thing I was on during bfing was asacol and pred...google pentasa and breastfeeding..u should get lots of info whether its safe and def talk to your OB first

Anyone can give up, it's the easiest thing in the world to do. But to hold it together when everyone else would understand if you fell apart, that's true strength

Diagnosed with severe Crohn's colitis in May 2005. I deal with daily arthritis ALL over my body, cystic acne, & fibromyaglia. Have taken Imuran, Remicade, TPN, Colozal, Entocort, Flagyl, PamineForte, Cipro, Dicyclomine, Prednisone, Asacol, Prevacid, and the list goes on. Currently on Remicade every 4wks, 20mg Pred, Asacol, 75mg Imuran, etc.

I was on pentasa while breastfeeding. My GI said they hardly absorb at all in the bloodstream.

i have been on pentasa while bf for the last month.  i got the ok from my GI doc and my pediatrician, as well as calling the pregnancy risk line to double check.  The general concensus was that the only real side effect the baby might experience was diarrhea, and that if that was mild, the benefits of bf out weigh the potential risks.     so far, no diarrhea.
