i had an abnormal blood draw about 2 months ago, it was a little low, and last week it was full blown low. i read somewhere that those with autoimmune diseases are prone to hypothyroidism. just wondering if anyone else is here.

Hi Bunny! What do you mean your thyroid was "low?" Because if it was your TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) that was low, that actually means you are HYPERthyroid. If your TSH was high, that means you are hypothyroid. Yes, it's very weird.

I have Grave's disease, which is autoimmune hypERthyroidism, which means your heart starts beating about 23987 beats per minute, you lose a pound of body weight every 10 minutes, you're insomniac, tremulous, and have hyperactive reflexes. Basically your metabolism shoots up beyond belief. That is no way to live but thank goodness I am easily controlled with meds. Hypothyroidism is usually also easily controlled with meds and causes opposite symptoms - weight gain, lethargy, excessive drowsiness, etc. But then again no two people's symptoms are the same.

You can only tell if it's autoimmune thyroid disease by looking at the "thyroid profile," complete with the thyroid antibodies. Those with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (autoimmune hyPOthyroidism) or Grave's (autoimmune hypERthyroidism) will have dramatically increased thyroid antibodies. Lots of other conditions can also cause whacky thyroid numbers, however.

I will do my best to answer any questions you have!

I have Grave's too. Had my thyroid ablated and now I am hypothyroid. I had my endo appt yesterday and come to find out he thinks all of my pain in legs, cramps and foot pain is the synthroid binding to the entocort making the synthroid not effective. I am still in my first flare of crohns and can't get it under control. I am so sick of all of this!!!

I have hypothyroidism, but it was deemed "natural" and not auto-immune related.

I suffered with Hyperthyroidism a few years ago. Mine was caused by a medication that was high in Iodine. I took meds for approx 18 mos and now am doing fine.

I am borderline hypothyroid. My TSH was about 8. However, my Thyroid antibodies were 4+. I think now they call this "subclinical hypothyroidism". When I was tested I had a doctor willing to treat me because he said it could easily be missed. I take 0.075 mg levothyroxine daily with annual TSH levels- has to be the easiest problem I have to treat.

i think i am hypo, i have the weakness, weight gain, and a general feeling of things being in slow motion, its even hard to lift my arms above my head sometimes. im pretty sure she said hypo but i could be wrong. they put me on 50 mcg of levo thyroxine a day. how long before you notice a difference? shes repeating my bloods in 6 weeks so im assuming before then. my lethargy started about 2 months ago which was about when i had bloods drawn and i was a tad low. also, are there any side effects from the meds? and can an abnormal thyroid cause other problems in your body. i guess they are attributing it to my immune system but im not sure if that because of a guess or some test that figures it out. im going to get a copy of the bloodwork to see exactly what my levels are. thanks for the help, any info is appreciates as this is a new thing for me and i like to know all about the thigs wrong with me.
thanks again

I am hypothyroid because I am growing nodules on my thyroid and they are slowly killing it. It is not auto-immune related.

I just started thinking about the same thing recently. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 10 years ago and have been taking synthroid since. I am not sure if it's related to the Crohn's which was diagnosed about 12 years ago. I started wondering if the thyroid issue is just the hypothyroidism or is actually the autoimmune disease type (Hashimoto's thyroiditis). I am not sure if I am more vulnerable to this type since I already have one autoimmune disease with the Crohn's. I guess I should have that checked out.

I am hypothyroid and take 75 mcg of synthroid daily. I felt like I had been given pep pills right away, within a week or so. Hopefully you will get the same result bunny.

I was also dx with Graves a year ago. After having CD for 8 yrs. My heart literally felt like it was pounding out of my chest and my hands shook really bad. After a few visits with the endo and been on Atenol and PTU i feel sooooo much better. I was just wondering. Has anybody taken the Radioactive Iodine? I have talked with the endo about this but i'm hesitent.
