How long was the recovery?  Was it worth it?  I would especially like to hear experiences of anyone with a rectal resection.  Do you get a temporary illeostomy or how does it heal?  How long is the hospital stay?  Thank you.

Hi princesscolon, I have never had a recal resection. I am in remission with being on Remicade. I see that you will be starting on Humira in a couple of days. I am hoping the Humira will help you.

I just had my resection surgery for my enterocutaneous fistula on Janury 11. Since my fistula was along the incision line from my past 3 surgeries that all took place in 2007 I am now having issues. First off I ended up with ileus where my bowels didnt wake up and they had begun to feed me so I ended up with the NG tube about a 6 days post op. I had the NG tube for 5 days before it was finally removed. They finally started me on TPN after I lost 10 pounds from the ordeal I am now at 85 pounds (I am 4' 9.5"). I was going to be released the 29th but I had an area along the incision that became red and inflamed and it was a hematoma so my surgeon drained it in the room the 29th and kept me 1 more day to monitor things. Well this past Sunday I began with low grade fevers and then on monday I noticed the signs of wound infection. I removed the steri strips in the area that was bothering me and it had formed like a head like a pimple wound so I was able to scratch the skin and it opened and began to drain. I had to see a diff doc that day since mine doesnt have office hours on mondays. The doc lidocained my stomach which burned like crazy especially since it was in the abscessed area about 1 inch all around the hole was filled with pus and so he cut open the area a bit more so that i can pack it with gauze to let it drain. Then come Wednesday and another area was red and swollen etc...went in saw my doc he had to open the area up to where the hematoma was the darn thing had tunneled thru causing the abscess. I was told that since Ihad the wound infection before and the fistula was there that the skin will always be contaminated which will in most cases cause there to be wound infections in the future. I lost my belly button in this surgery since the fistula was right up against the belly button. Otherwise I am doing well as far as eating now and bms passing gas etc.
