Thank you all for your responses to my emails.  I feel so much better knowing other people have walked in my shoes and are now doing well.  I recently found out from a CAT scan for the crohns that I have a polyp on my endometrium that needs to come out.  I scheduled the surgery and told my GI doc about it and he said not to start the 6mp until 2 weeks after the surgery.  My concern is does the surgery make the crohns worse?  My biggest complaints are the cramping and diarrhea.  I am going in 2 weeks for the surgery and haven't had surgery since i was a teenager and am now in my 40's.  I am not good in hospital settings having become a pseudo germaphobe following my daughter's treatment for leukemia. Just wanting to see other people have other surgeries (other than crohn's related).
Thanks so much!!
Christine

I had my gallbladder removed after diagnosis and before any resections. The old fashioned way, not laproscopicly (sp). So I have the lovely scar wrapping around my rib cage. It didn't cause any new issues with my CD. I wasn't on 6MP at the time, just prednisone, I think. It was about 18 years ago and my memory is a bit fuzzy about what drugs I was on. I might have been on flagyl too. I also had a c-section after diagnosis and before any resections. But I wasn't on any CD meds at the time. I had a no CD med pregnancy. I think the best thing you can do is trust your surgeon to tell you what you can and can't be on, and then run it by your GI. If your doctors work together and you trust them, you should be in pretty good hands.

Best wishes for a complication free surgery and a speedy recovery.
Suzanne

Yeah, I have had a hysterectomy and two disc fusions in my neck. Only time I was on meds was with the last disc fusion. And I was only taking Asacol. I also have a knee artho surgery coming up sometime in the next month or two. I am sure all will go well for you, and I hope you have a speedy recovery.
Been living with Crohn's Disease for 32 years.  Currently on Asacol, Prilosec 60 mg, Estrace, Prinivil, Diltiazem, Percoset prn for pain and Calcium.  Resections in 2002 and 2005.  Recently diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and doing tests to see if I have Inflammatory Arthritis or AS.

I had an ablation and polyp removal from my uterus a year ago and then my appendix out four months ago. I'm on Humira and Asacol and basically in remission. I had no problems with my Crohn's after the surgeries. I worried that I might because I had to stop Humira for 4 weeks with the first surgery and 6 weeks with the second. But, no. I was fine. I hope all goes will with your surgery.

I had my gallbladder out - it went fine, but I did develop an infection which slowed my recovery ( I was on high-dose prednisone). I can't say I was too affected by it though. I still was back at work and physically active very quickly.

Good luck,

Bev

hi nikki.

i have had crohn's for over 30 years.  i had an unrelated surgery.  i had stomach cancer and had to have almost half of my stomach removed.  post-surgery actually had my crohn's in remission for a long period of time (several years).  you can check out my story on healingwell.com bookstore (if you knew how regular i am; you wouldn't be so full of it).  i hope all is well with you.  just keep the faith and you'll be fine.

nikki...I've had two back surgeries and my gallbladder removed since my diagnosis. I was only on Pentasa during those times so I can not speak to the meds part. I just know that I had outcomes that were no different than a non-CDer with the same surgery. The only thing that Cd may have affected was the gallbladder - surgeon thought I might not succeed with lap due to possible scar tissue from the Cd....yipee he was able to still make it thru the lap.

Best of luck and take care
Dx'd '90 (emergency rupture), symptoms ignored long before that, '03 fistulas and bad flagyl reactions, B12 weekly, Pentasa [until I surrender to the bigger meds]
I'm riding on the escalator of life....
