Has anyone who has just started on a Probiotic ever gotten a fever?

I took my very first probiotic pill last Thursday (Culturelle) and by Friday afternoon I was shaking and shivering with body aches and chills.  My fever spiked to 102.7 and then was just between 99 - 101 the rest of the weekend.

I thought I was getting the flu but I didn't.  Then I remembed the "new" thing I'd just introduced into my body.

What do you think the chances are that the Probiotic caused that?  I mean, it IS bacteria! :-)
Diagnosed in October, 2003 at age 31.
36/F/SC
Currently taking Colazal, Nexium, One-A-Day multivitamin
Secondary conditions: mouth ulcers, joint pain, extreme fatigue

It sounds unusual, but I guess anything is possible. Stop the probiotic and see if the fever goes away. You also can get a fever from a Crohn's flare...how are you doing otherwise?

currently taking Pentasa 2750 mg- 9pills/day and on and off Prednisone for flares

I kind of doubt the probiotics caused the fever. They are good bacteria.
Been living with Crohn's Disease for 32 years.  Currently on Asacol, Prilosec 60 mg, Estrace, Prinivil, Diltiazem, Percoset prn for pain and Calcium.  Resections in 2002 and 2005.  Recently diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and doing tests to see if I have Inflammatory Arthritis or AS.

It takes some days or even weeks for probiotics to build up to a therapuetic level in your gut, so I would suspect that the fever was unrelated.

I think it's coincidence too, probiotics are nothing more than good bacteria and are helpful not harmful.

That's interesting, I have that all the time and never thought it could be my probiotic! It probably started the same time I started taking the probiotic. Guess I'll never know with all the other crap i'm on! Good luck!
Pentasa 500mg/8x daily down to 6x 1/08; Entocort 3mg/3x daily down to 2x 1/08; Percocet/Ultram for pain; Protonix 40mg
Neurontin, 900mg 3x/day
Probiotic
Ferrous Sulfate 325mg/daily for anemia
Azathioprine 150mg
Currently on a Low-residue diet as of 11/26

I'm so tired, when will this get better?

If you use a probiotic product and experience an effect that concerns you, contact your health care provider. Like every other product each person may react differently to a product.
Take care.

Thanks for the replies, guys.  I thought it was a longshot, but the fever was just so out-of-left-field and the only new thing was the probiotic!

I'm doing fairly well, although I have been kind of sick lately.  Maybe kind of a flare but not that bad, I've just never had a fever with a flare before.  In the past few weeks I've gone from bad bowels, to swollen feet (to the point I was on crutches) for 10 days to achy muscles to the weird fever.  My GP said it was probably just a little 48 hour virus...I just can't ever remember having a fever without vomit being involved! tongue

I think I'll try the probiotic again on Friday morning...that way if it WAS that, I'll have the weekend to recover from another fever.
