Due to a sinus infection from H&^L, that I still seem to be fighting, I have had to do multiple courses of antibiotics. I have been taking probiotics to counter act the antibiotics and trying to eat yogurt with live culture. I hate yogurt. But I just have uncontrollable gas that is new since the antibiotics so I'm wondering if I'm not doing something right or if there is more I could be doing. Maybe it just need more time. The last antibiotics were mid January.

I have the Primadophilus Reuteri that I get at the local Whole Foods in the refrigerated section. I keep them in my fridge at home. But, they also carry them at my local grocery store unrefrigerated. So whats the deal with that. Same brand. If I don't need to keep them refrigerated then I would be more likely to remember to take them.

And that's the next question, what is the best time/way to take it and how often given that things go through me at a very rapid pace.

I may have to be on more antibiotics soon to clear this up so I really would like to do something about the constant rumbling and explosions.

Are there any other things I should be doing?

Sorry, I'm not pb4 but thought I'd jump in w/my 2 cents. Since you're doing multiple courses of antibiotics I would *definitely* bump up to a stronger probiotic; VSL#3 being the Cadillac... jmho... Just bought it myself. It's about $40 for the bottle of 60 capsules. Each capsule has 8? strains and 225 billion viable organisms. It might do the trick for you. There are other stronger ones like Theralac (not as strong as VSL, though. I think it has 6 strains and 20 billion organisms). We've use it and like it, too. Take probiotics at least an hour before or two hours after your antibiotic. Continue the high dosage version for *several* weeks after you're done with your antibiotic.

FYI, I know someone with Crohn's who is currently taking antibiotics. She is taking 900 billion of VSL every day to counteract the antibiotics. Food for thought...

Good luck! Hope something helps!

Hi Zanne :)

Going by what I know, it's best to avoid the primadophilus that is not being kept cold, you lose about 30% of it's strength, watch for the experation date on the bottle as well...

While taking antibiotics you can increase the amount of probiotics you're taking but most important also, is to make sure you take your probiotics at least 2 hours AFTER you're done taking your antibiotics for the day, reason being is that the antis will kill off the pros, even if you're taking something as strong as the VSL3.

Good luck and feel better soon.

Where do you get the VSL3? Is it by internet or can you get it at a store?

Oh, also, I am not currently taking any antibiotics. I am just anticipating that I will still need to do another round because there is still something brewing. I'm having a sinus CT next Friday, so we are at a stand still until then unless my temp sky rockets again.

i use a nasal wash (neti pot) to combat my recurrent sinus infections. Taking antibiotics gave me c-difficile and then triggered CD for me last year.
Dx'd 5/07, azasan, florastor, caltrate, fish oil, cod liver oil

You can check on their website. They have a store locater feature where you can put in your city to see if any pharmacy in the area carries it. If not, you can either order it directly from them or ask one of your local pharmacies to get it in for you. Our Walgreens was able to get it for me, though it took a week and a half.

Like apalaura, my son uses the neti pot nearly every night. I do think it helps unless you have an infection already going in the far, far recesses of your sinuses. It's a great preventative, though!

neti pots are amazing. weird at first, but they work great.
48 y/o woman.  Diagnosed 4/06 after colonscopy, SBFT, CT-scan all showed crohns. 3 months later, after pred and remicade, all tests showed no crohns. December '06 had adhesions cut through a laparoscopy. Now taking Glycolax, Ultra Fiber Plus, Florastor, and DHEA. Have become gluten-free diet per naturopath's tests.

That's weird. I work in a whole sale mart and last week featured in one of the other showroom's windows was a full display of neti-pots. I had never heard of them or seen them before. But given my current situation, I stopped and took notice. I have to walk by their showroom to get to the bathroom from my showroom! Maybe I'll see if they have an extra one I can buy from from. I do love working in the whole sale industry. Half off whole sale pricing!
