My daughter came down with a pretty bad cold. Does anyone know if it's okay to take the usual cough and cold medications (decongestants/antihistamines), with Crohn's? I don't mean cold f/x or echinachea, as I've heard they boost you immune system, which can be a bad thing. She loves drinking tea, are the lemon herb teas okay? I bought some Cammomile lemon. Thanks for any input.
My daughter was diagnosed Feb. 19/07, (13 yrs. old at time of diagnosis), with Crohn's of the Terminal Illium. Initially, 9 weeks of Prednisone, currently taking 2000mgs of Pentasa.

Throughout my entire time of having CD flaring to some degree, mostly severe, I've always taken the usual, I like contact C and Nyquil, never noticed any worseing of symptoms from either of them.

I've also taken antihistamines for itchy hives/rashes also with no problems, infact I think those can be very helpful...I drink chamomile tea everyday first thing in the am, it's a natural anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, so she should drink it everyday if she likes it.

Also, ever since I started taking vitamin C-calcium ascorbate I havn't gotten a cold, mind you I don't get colds/flues often at all anyway.

I have found that MOST cold meds are okay, but that some decongestants can be way too strong for my belly. Like Mucinex - I bought the generic version and it stayed in my body for less than an hour. Horrible experience, but then I know other people that swear by that stuff...

Also, I always have better luck with the liquid cold medicines rather than pills... they don't seem to upset my stomach as much. Using anything for more than a day or two can send me into a flare though, so I usually stop as soon as I'm able...
26f, dx'd CD July '05 after 6 fistula/abscess surgeries
Remicade only, every 16 weeks.
Digestive enzymes, and probiotics.
Doing pretty darn good, all things considered. :-)
