Has your GI or Perinatologist recommended that you take extra folic acid due to our digestion problems?

My physician did suggest taking extra folic acid. I took 2mg a day for about 6 months before I got pregnant. I think normal recommended dose is 0.4mg. Once I was pregnant I stuck with this for the first 3 months. Now I am just taking what is in my prenatal vitamin (1mg). The doctor told me if I am not flaring and not having diarrhea it will be fine. My blood test showed my levels are fine. I also read that folic acid will flush out of your system if there is too much. Talk to your doctor of course but I don't see any harm in taking extra if anything you don't need will go through your system.

I wasn't given that recommendation, both were fine with me taking prenatal vitamins. I was recommended DHA supplements and have been taking those. I don't have d though and am in remission. Maybe that factors in.

Good luck!

I don't have d either, but have had two small bowel ressections which sometimes effects abosrbtion. My OB didn't give me that recommendation, but my gastro did. My OB says that people are on as much as 5000mcg of Folic Acid depending on their situation and it won't hurt. I was also put on DHA. Yes, I am trying (well this was the first month-has to get meds in order first). Won't know if it is positive for two weeks!. Thanks for the thoughts!

Mine never told me to take "extra" just to take folic acid and all was fine, 15 yrs ago while flaring with CD I gave natural birth to a healthy 8lb 3oz baby boy.

I was told just to take a prenatal vitamin. I track the foods I eat on a website to make sure I get the right nutrients and calories, carbs, etc. so I make sure I try to eat foods rich in folate, too.

BTW, we have been trying since July with no luck (except for the month of January since I had surgery.) I anticipated a bit of a problem since I am of advanced maternal age at 37 LOL! (That's really what they call it)

Good luck to you! :-) :-) :-)
36 year old female. Dx'd and undx'd a few times. Was just redx'd again 04/2007.
History of rectal abscesses and fistulas (28 surgeries including abscess I & D, exploratory surgeries, 2 C-ton drains and 1 fistula plug) Count does not include self bursting abscesses.
1st Remicade infusion 6/5/07.  Lots of joint pain, and a new fistula since the 2nd infusion 6/19.
Praying I'll get better soon so we can have a baby.

My doctor didn't suggest extra folic acid either but he did have me start taking a pre-natal vitamin way before we were actually trying just for the extra boost of nutrients.  I'm 30 weeks pg with #2.

Ginger - ha!  I'm of advanced maternal age too (36)!  It's like we should be going to our OB visits with a cane.  :)

Ginger-- what website do you use to track nutrients? I'd be curious (and scared) to see how I am doing.
