That was probably from me. My Mom had it. She had so much bowel removed that she didn't have enough to absorb nutrients. She had to take a special fatty acid to help in her nutrition. That is why the surgeons try to only take the minimal amount of bowel necessary in resections. I don't know exactly how much she had taken out. But in her first resection, they just cut and cut and cut. This was back in the mid to late 60's before they really understood CD and how quickly it could come back. So by the time she had her 3rd resection, she really was in trouble.

If you haven't had FEET of intestine taken out, you don't have to worry about it. I've had about 4 feet taken out in 3 resections and so far I'm OK, but I really don't want to press my luck with too many more surgeries.

Thank You Suzanne for your fast response. I have not had any resection surgery yet and I hope I can avoid that. Thank You, Kay

Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS) is defined as malabsorption resulting from anatomical or functional loss of a significant length of the small intestine. Most commonly this occurs after bowel resection in the newborn period.
