Episcleritis is an inflammatory condition affecting the episcleral tissue that lies between the conjunctiva and the sclera. The sclera provides a protective, tough casing around the eye and a healthy sclera is white. The episclera is the layer above the sclera in the eye.
Scleritis is quite a rare eye condition. It is almost always associated with auto-immune diseases.
Two thirds of all cases of episcleritis are idiopathic in nature [meaning no known cause] and will get better, often without treatment, in 7-10 days. The other third of cases are associated with an underlying disease that the person has like RA, CD, gout, etc.
