My Crohn's have been on remission since Jan. So I have started practicing on having a baby. But have not been able to conceive yet. I started last year in April. I have been to my Gyno numerous times for test, sonograms and everything checked out okay. She says I am ovulating and all but seem to be missing it. They even check my endometrium and it checked out fine. I even took Clomid once but nothing. So I left it alone to mother nature and figure my time will come.

Anyways, in the act of practicing I have not been able to enjoy it. Recently I even changed positions for a more comfortable entrance and there was pain, ( I have not told my hubby, cause I don't want to ruin the mood or worry him, he thinks I am so delicate because of everything I went through with my crohn's last year). I feel pain when penetration that I want it to end. Almost like I am being split in half kinda of pain. I am even having hard times reaching "a goal". Mostly feeling pressure in my abdominal area and anus. I am 31 yrs old and my sex drive is no longer there. I used to feel very comfortable doing the act in my 20's looking forward to it, but now it is like I wonder what will hurt, I know I used to love it, but now when in the act I just want it to end. I get this weird feeling like I need to go either urinate or #2. We have been together for 8 yrs and I notice a difference in the practice. I just called my Gyno to make an appointment but won't be able to see her until April 8th. I told her I am having some discomfort and she knows that we are trying to conceive but I guess I have to wait that long. Meanwhile I do want to keep trying specially when I know I am ovulating but are worried that I will feel the same discomfort.

I wanted to know if any women have felt this kinda pain during sex, after being on remission. I just don't know what to do with myself anymore, if it is not one thing is another. I am currently only taking Lialda 2x a day and 1 Multivitamin, 1 Fish Oil, 1 Probiotic. On days when I remember I take Nexium.

I appreciate any comments. Thanks :)

The discomfort you are experiencing is not unlike what women in menopause describe, and the best advice I have heard for them is to use ample lubricant. As for the internal pressures, it is not surprising that gas or simply sore, crampy, inflamed gut would react to the act negatively and cause discomfort. Women might be surprised to know that even we guys, who are supposed to be perpetual satyrs when it comes to sex, sometimes have problems with some postures and activities when we are full of gas or having a flare. Like every other aspect of life, it seems IBD requires some adjustments in the bedroom too. You are wise to be consulting your gynie on this, and speaking as a man I would want my partner to tell me if certain things caused her discomfort. He can't accommodate your needs unless he knows it's hurting you.

I experience the same thing. I am changing from "the patch" to "the pill" to see if the lower dose of hormone will help. Penetration is painful but once I get going it gets better. Some positions cause me more pressure in my rectum as well and I often feel like I have to urinate. Penetration stings sometimes. I am also making an appt w/ a gyno to make sure I dont have a fistula. I have also been having a difficulty climaxing. I take Pentasa and Nexium as well.
26 Year old married female.  Diagnosed w/ CD 3 years ago, IBS for over 10 years before that, which was probably the CD.  Currently on Pentasa 4 pills/4x day, hysociamine prn, nexium, and ortho evra.  Good times!!!

I had pain issues when I was with my exhusband and my gyn had suggested a different position and added lubricant to help. I think with him it may have been a mental thing. Granted since I got really sick last February with my surgeries and all it has been over a year with my husband even when my doctors say it is okay my husband worries since he is 2 times my weight that he will screw something up. You can actually even see some of the internal sutures at this point from the weight loss I had. I do find even when I was in remission for about a year before this mess I am going through I had times when it was painful not the whoile time. I also find I become tired a lot sooner than I use to and I am going to be 29 in a month. Since my surgeries I get tired just walking down a flight of stairs I dont know when my husband will feel comfortable having sex with me again he doesnt like medical stuff even when his daughter was an infant her pooh made him gaga even foul smelling things have made him vomit so before I understand when I had the ostomy and the fistula right at my belly button...they had to remove my belly button with my last surgery. When I tell him the doc says its okay he doesnt believe me or he believes the doc is saying it is ok too soon. I mean I know my GI said if by June/July time I have no issues we get the green light to try for a family makes me wonder if my husband will wait till then or not.

Being a newlywed its rough plus he is 13 years older than I am so if we have children I want him to be around the longest possible time (he is 1 who refuses to go to a doc unless something is extremely serious for a few days 1st) he actually thought I was exaggerating back in Feb 07 when I began with fevers etc and come to find out that was when my ileum perforated.

Good luck to you I hope things work out

MikeB- Thanks for your advice. I was considering lubrication to help with the burning sensation, but doesn't it kill off sperm cells..and I need those...lol....I will let him know before we continue to try again. I hope he doesn't get worried. :)

Dragonfly- Should I contact my GI and tell him about my discomfort or should a Gyno be able to help me first. Both Doctors know my situation in trying to conceive.

Fitsy- I have also felt the burning sensation. When will you be going to your gyno, my appt. isn't until April :(. I hope your doc gives you good suggestions you can share. Thanks :) I heard of a fistula, what is that? have you had them before? Would I have that too? because at times I feel like I am going to split in half ( my butt of course) ..it's such a terrible feeling...

First, I am so sorry that this is happening for you. Second good luck I hope you have a very happy result.
Suggestions so far:
use lube without cide
I would talk to both your docs, sometime ladies w/ crohns have to have high risk obgyn (pain is there for a reason)
I wonder if you might have an infection (possibly from several different issues including fistulas)

i've been in remission for like 3 years and have had 2 kids in the process. after i had my last child (he's 6mos now) when we do have time for sex...which is a rare occasion, it's very painful for me. sometimes different positions help but often he can't go in very far and lube doesn't do the trick. i haven't talked to anyone, except my hubby, about it, i kinda thought it had to do with having the last baby and possible the pushing moved some stuff around down there, i don't know. i know this doesn't pertain to your situation, but i'm thinking it might have some to do with cd. cuz i've been having issues with that again. what i've started doing that helps is that i get umm..how shall i say...very excited, before penatration...and stop right before i'm almost, u know, there....and then penatration isn't painful or else i don't notice it cuz i'm all worked up. u have to let your hubby know what's going on first tho...so he can..u know...help...and i'm sure he'd be happy to do that...lol...guys love to help...lol.
maybe tmi..but that's worked for me. also, we used astroglide while concieving and it didn't effect me getting preggers.

i hope i wasn't too graphic....hehe.

Jeny- I also have Astroglide, I will give it a try I was just worried that it would kill his sp**m cells you know. But you give me some hope. I will definetly discuss it with my hubby and make another appt. to see my Gastro. I hope is not that bad. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Thanks for the advice...you weren't that graphic that I know exactly what you are saying. Thanks :)

I have the exact same problem! I used to enjoy sex, but now its like I don't want to have it all b/c of the pain or anticipation of pain. Its usually right at penetration, it sometimes gets better during, but not all the time. Out of frustration, I've tried different positions, lubricants, etc., and nothing. My sex drive is gone and I'm only 26y/o.

I had an appt. with my gyno for Monday, but they just called to see if I can reschedule it. I'm hoping to see if there is anything she can "check out" or suggest to make it better. I have a feeling that some of my meds are a culprit for low sex drive, but the pain has to be from something!!
26 y/o, diagnosed at 25 y/o
Asacol 400mg 3 pills 3x daily
Entocort, 3 pills daily
Upset stomach daily, tired all the time (except when on Prednisone), occasional abdominal pain
Weigh loss, but scared that once I start the Entocort where will be lots of weight gain :(

I totally know what you mean!!!!  I was having a flare a year ago and I also realized a pain and burning while "in the act".  I was getting swelling in my ankles, too, and was sent to a rheumatologist.  My Crohns/Colitis went systematic and was affecting other areas of my body.  They said the pain and burning was from a fistula in my "nether regions" :-)    It was like an open sore down there and when we tried to get busy when my guy tried to get started up I felt like I was splitting in 2.  I had to take Prednisone in high doses and som pain meds, but after about 2 weeks the fistula cleared up and teh swelling etc.  calmed down.  You might want to have them check for that.  I am only 32, and I have to work up to being "interested"...I love him very much, but I am tired all the time..maybe I will try all of the suggestions about good warm-ups!
Diagnosed with Crohns/Colitis in 2004. Currently taking Azulfidine 500 mg/3 x 3 day, Synthroid. Have had joint complications such as pyroderma gangrenosum in ankles as complication of IBD.

Things are better for me now but it used to be bad like many of you have described. Have any of you had your testosterone levels checked? I know my levels were way down due to meds and it (sex) was much better once that was taken care of. Also, in regards to lube, the best I've tried is "revelation" that you can buy through Passion Parties. It works way better than anything I've ever bought at the drug store. Happy Baby Making! --and I hope things get more comfortable.

There is a sperm-friendly lubricant called Pre-Seed. You can buy it online. It's a little pricey, but worth it if you really want it. As for the pain, the discomfort, all the things that you are describing - you are not alone. I have 2 children and we are trying for #3. I'm not really comfortable putting my laundry out on the internet, but if you want to email me we can chat. Click on my username and you can get my email address that way.

Mellie- Once the fistula cleared up does it ever come back? And how was the Doctor able to diagnose you with it. How long did it take you to get better. How are you feeling now in the act, are you back to your regular self? I am glad someone got some relief. I used to feel very tired too, but I have more energy now. Even thought I still take Lialda 2x day I also take 1 Multivitamin, 1 fish oil, & 1 Probiotic a day. I got to the gym at least 3 times a week and when I am feeling too tired I have to take a break, cause I feel that my body is not recovering from working out.

what mellies suggested is what i was gonna say, i have the same pain, and it turned out to b from an rv fistula, but fistulas can be n e where. Also, if u have scarring in ur rectum or intestines, it can be painful. Sometimes there are signs u feel that let you know if u have fistulas, do u get recurring absesses? like boils in ur nether regions that fill w/fluid? do u have drainage down there? or sometimes (not all the time an odd odor? Docs can sometimes dx these with catscans or ultra sounds, usually surgeons or GI's. I hope u find relief

Praying4healing-When I first went to the doctor to get checked out he told me that I had a hemorrhoid inside the rectum. He checked it and said it happens to people in general. I told my new doc about it too, but I believe he was more concerned on taking care of my flare. I called him again today to set up an appt. but I haven't heard from him yet. Odor I am not sure if I have, I don't know what odor to look for, I do notice thought that I have more v**al discharge everyday even before I ovulate but I didn't think much of it. But now I wonder why I do, and I have been noticing that I always have to wake up in the middle of the night to pee almost like about 2 months, I always thought it was because I was drinking too much water before I go to bed, but sometimes I don't drink that much. I also realize that during intercourse I feel like I am not producing enough moisture, I had told one gyno that once and he told me that I needed to get more excited before having sex and to use a lubricant. He said that when you are young, you are more prone to produce more moisture, now that we are getting older and with our crazy working schedules and stress it takes us longer to produce moisture. I was like really. I never went back to him again. So I have a new doctor (lady) I'll see what she has to say.

Hi Pattie,

When I had the fistula I knew something was wrong b/c "babymaking" hurt so bad I felt like I was splitting in half.  I was having a flare of my CD/colitis, along with sore in my mouth, so the DR did an exam down there and said I had a fistula/lesion that was a complication of the inflammatory disease.  Once I had the prednisone and took a "break" from babymaking for about two weeks it healed. I have not had it happen again, but the doc said it could.  Some signs that I was told to look for that the inflammation from IBD has gone systematic in the bloodstream: sores in the mouth, like a canker sore,  a small bump along the eyelash line that itches(like a stye), red bumps on the legs/shins, and swellign of the ankles. He said that when the inflammation is systematic it attackes your largest organ (your skin),,just a thought.

Diagnosed with Crohns/Colitis in 2004. Currently taking Azulfidine 500 mg/3 x 3 day, Synthroid. Have had joint complications such as pyroderma gangrenosum in ankles as complication of IBD.
