I haven't tried it for Crohn's specifically but when I went to see a chiropractor two years ago (who also dabbled in naturopath stuff) said that my hip pain was cause by inflammation of the valve in my intestine (turns out this is where my Crohn's is) and told me to pick up a certain kind of pill. It has oregano leaf powder in it (along with 4 other things) and less than a week of taking it (with meals) my hip pain went away - and stayed away for quite a while.

I don't know if that means anything in the grand scheme of things but seeing the chiro twice (or three times?) and taking that pill plus glucosamine fixed me right up. And how funny is it that he knew exactly where the problem was just by doing a few tests (like pushing my arms down, having me push on his hands etc). He didn't tell me I had Crohn's but he was on the right track.
Current:
Dx: Crohn’s Ileitis as of 22/02/08
Rx: 4g Pentasa (2 pills 4 times per day)
9mg Budesonide (one capsule 3 times per day for the next 6 weeks)

Pre 22/02/08: 2.4g Asacol (discontinued due to Crohn's Diagnosis)

I too will follow this post with great interest! I was just reading last night a magazine from the health food store, and oil of oregano was rated one of 20 of the best supplements to take. So I was very curious about its results due to its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits. Thanks pb4 you read my mind!!! :)

I bought some yesterday, took one dose of it last night, pretty potent tasting, it has EVOO in it as well, so I think that's fantastic because I'm a huge fan of extra virgine olive oil...Usually at night I get a little gassy, but last night I noticed I didn't fart once, could be coincidence, but I'm continuing with it and will update.

Oil of oregano is also a powerful anti virus and anti bacterial agent. If you have a cold, put a couple of drops under your tongue or rub on the bottom of your feet.

I've also read that it can thin the blood, so always check with your doctor and/or pharmacist to make sure it won't interact with other meds that can affect the blood (like imuran).

I'm confused...is this a pill or an actual bottle of oil?

It's a bottle of oil, they seem to have 2 sizes, both are small bottles though...I bought the smallest bottle just incase I find it causes me greif, if I find it helps with any of my GI issues, I will buy the bigger because it's usually cheaper in the long run.

I took it once yesterday and so far today I only pooped 2 times (I usually go around 5 or less a day but rarely just twice/day) the poop was a bit darker brown than usual(which might not even mean anything since I took only 3 small drops as directed) but they were good poops...so if it continues to help with frequency issues then I'm sticking with it for sure.

So do you just put a few drops in your mouth or do you mix it in with food/drink? Would this be purchased at a health food store over, say, a regular drug store?

Yup, you can put 3 drops under your tounge (it's peppery) or you can mix it with food or drink...health food store, I doubt it would be at a drug store, but you never know I guess.

Jumping in...my chiropractor wanted us all to take oil of oregano, oh, maybe 5 years ago now. He was pushing it for its anti-viral properties. I guess we were all coming down with too many "bugs" at the time. I never did buy it. Probably should have.

Keep us posted, pb4!

I believe there is a whole protocol on Jinipatelthompson.com on using oil of oregano for IBD.

Thanks for posting that, chachka! (Welcome to the forum, too!) I read everything Jini has online about oil of oregano. Very interesting! :-)

Kasper, Jini's site says the following: "Oregano Oil is like probiotics, in that the species and strain are very important to obtain the desired action/results. Make sure you get the correct species (Oreganum Vulgare) and subspecies (Hirtum is a good one)." It recommends two brands that meet these qualifications: Joy of The Mountains and North American Herb & Spice. I'm guessing your local health food store is the way to go. I'll be checking mine today!

I don't know if the oil and the regular oregano have the same properties, but I am one who cannot tolerate oregano.  It really upsets my stomach.  I guess I have to be the difficult one:)

Been living with Crohn's Disease for 32 years.  Currently on Asacol, Prilosec 60 mg, Estrace, Prinivil, Diltiazem, Percoset prn for pain and Calcium.  Resections in 2002 and 2005.  Recently diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and doing tests to see if I have Inflammatory Arthritis or AS.

Oh my gosh! My father - who believes every snake-oil salesman he finds has been PUSHING this stuff on me for the last 4 years!!! So, naturally, I've always brused him off, but if you guys think it might work, I'd sure be willing to try it. For those of you actually using it, PLEASE keep us posted. This is very important.

The oil of oregano I bought contains oilve oil which recorded uses of the olive leaf have been for fever and coughs and colds. Some cultures have traditionally used the olive leaf as a boost to the immune system. In England in the early 1800’s, olive leaves were boiled and the liquid was used to treat colonial troops suffering from malaria. Scientists isolated a substance in the leaf called oleuropein, thought to be responsible for the trees powerful disease resistance. In the mid 1990’s olive leaf extracts have been marketed in health stores offering the benefits of wide spectrum antibiotic, anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties.

The fact that it has anti-fungal anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties is huge for the health benefits it has, it also contains omegas 3-6, and helps with so many health issues...I often rave about it because it's the only oil I eat, I've replaced butter with it and I also use it as a moisturizer every single day.

Needless to say, I was tickled pink when I read on the bottle of oil of oregano that it contains olive oil.

You guys should google extra virgine olive oil to read the actual health benefits it has, stomach ulcers, heart, high cholesterol, ect.

Smile :)

Are you from Canada? (I am)...I bought it from Sangsters, infact I bought the Sangsters brand because it was cheaper than one other brand they carry...I think if you're anywhere in north america you should be able to find it in any health food store.

The lady that owns my local health food store warned that is you do straight oil it will harm you. Apparenly it has to be diluted or the "fire" is really bad. I took a dose last night and again this morning. We will see. I really bought it for my husband, but I took it to help him take it and it might help me also.

Keep us posted.

That's weird RedAdmin about not mixing it, I don't mix it and have not had any issues, yes it's peppery but it doesn't last long...also there was no warning issued to me from the lady I bought it from, nor for my sister when she bought it weeks ago...infact it says right on the bottle that you can simply drop it under your tounge directly without having to dilute it.

I am sure that it is because you bought the one with the olive oil in it. They do may it with out and that is what you MUST be careful of. Also, there are people out there that even with the olive oil it could be more than they can take. I know just the smell of it almost made me not want to take it. I had to put it in about a 1/2 cup of water to get it down. But I am determined to take it at least twice a day for at least 1 week, just to see. My husband has some issues that the docs cannot figure out so I am actually doing this for him, because I don't know what else to do. But I did want to tell you how grateful I was to you yestereday for mentioning this. I would not have known about it any other way and it has given me something else to try for him.
