I recently read your response about how you are able to stay in remission w/out taking an oral rx, but solely off of holistic methods, exercise, etc. I was wondering how long this has worked for you and what types of medicines you were on before this and for how long?

I have had Crohn's for about two years now and have been on asacol (didn't work), 6-MP (didn't work), and am now on remicade (doesn't work too well). The only medication that seems to kick me in remission is high doses of prednisone, and I can no longer be put on prednisone when I am flaring b/c it has thinned my bones and caused osteopenia in my spine (at age 26).

I am basically desperate at this point to get kicked into remission so I can start living life again eyes

I am also afraid of future side effects from all of the medicines I've been on/am currently on. I really believe that holistic medicine works and just want to know what meds you were on before going holistic, how long you were on them, and what your disease was like and how long you had it prior to going the holistic/natural route? Also, how long have you been in remission?

Thank you so much for all of your help! yeah

Hi lilturbo :)

I'm actually not in FULL remission, although I do have a better grasp of my symptoms so I'll take what I can get.

I've tried every oral RX for IBD, and I'm either allergic or non-responsive to them so I had no choice but to go the natural route (I had to put my skeptisism aside and I'm glad I did)

I also eat a very healthy diet and exercise regularly, so it's not just the natural products alone that have helped, it's all in conjunction with one another...afterall what's the point in taking all the natural anti-inflammatories if you're gonna fill your face with sugar and junk right.

I use the following everyday;
bee propolis
omegas 3-6-9
Prodiem fibre supplements (as strongly suggested by my GI
probiotic called primadophilus reuteri made by natures way
Vitamins, B12, A, C-Calcium Ascorbate
and just started with the oil of oregano

I drink only water and chamomile tea (als a natural anti-inflammatory) everyday.

No junk foods (fast-foods, processed foods/drinks, animal fat, caffeine, refined sugar (I use Stevia when needed, it's a natural sweetner, or honey).

I started with the bee propolis about 5 yrs ago, then added the fibre supplement and from there added the omegas, then the probiotics then the chamomile tea and vitamins A and C-Calcium Ascorbate, I was already taking the B12 for about 8 yrs now.

Before I was taking all this, I was going a good 30+ times a day at one point with my CD (I've had CD for 17 yrs now with no full remission) so for the most part I wasn't taking anything because I was either allergic or non-responsive...prednisone was the only thing I could take on occassion but I became non-responsive to it so I had no choice but to try the natural route...I went from mostly ribbon-like poops combined with D, lots of mucus and bleeding and frequency/urgency down to about 5 or less/day now with no more blood, mucus and I have formed stools, but I still have some issues with frequency (normal for me is once a day) and urgencies likely alot to due with complications I've had with perianal crohns skin tags.

Remember, what works for one doesn't necessarily work for all, and it is usually a combination of things that work better than just one thing alone...people who are allergic to bees should avoid all bee products.

I would like to add the word of caution that just because it is natural does not mean it does not have side effects. I have taken many natural things, but never without doing a lot of research.

That is true, some natural products might not react well with one another or react well with some RX but the things I listed above that I take have no interaction with one another...I don't take oral RX but I know for sure according to my GI that bee propolis does not react to any oral RX and neither do probiotics.

I also have no side effects what so ever from any of the products I take....some people may, like with chamomile for example, if you have allergies to ragweed then you should avoid chamomile as it's from the same origin...and as I already mentioned about the bee propolis and other bee products to avoid if you're allergic to bees.

Thank you so much pb4! I appreciate all of your help! I have been wanting to go the natural route for sometime because I, like you, have problems achieving full remission on normal oral rx (and DO NOT like the side effects)! Right now I am flaring and just want to get healthy and be able to live a (semi) normal life. It really is a trial and error for me at this point, and I am definitely going to look into the natural products that you use! I will keep you posted! Thanks again! =)

You're very welcome lilturbo!!

Best of luck finding a combination that works best for you, just be sure to add one thing at a time so you know what is helping with what and give each product a fair chance, it can take a couple of months or maybe a little longer before you see improvements...it can be a long road like with anything.

pb4-I ordered bee propolis today from the same company you get yours from. Right now they are having a sale-buy two, get three free! I got five bottles for $15.90! You take the capsules right? I'll let you know how I'm doing once I start taking them! My peptamin came in today, so i guess I will be starting my liquid diet tomorrow (eek). Take Care!!

Yup I take the caps, I take one cap two times a day...they always have great sales on...I buy my omegas 3-6-9, Vitamins A and C-Calcium Ascorbate from them as well...Even with all the stuff (naturals) I take, it's way cheaper than many of the oral RX and no side-effects for me from them...I know not everyone has the option to drop their RX especially if it's helping them but in a big way I'm actually glad I can't take the oral RX.

Keep me posted on how it goes, I'm quite curious...and just so you know, when I told my GI I was taking it and how it helped he encouraged me to continue with it daily for the rest of my life because he said, even if it didn't help with many of my symptoms it was still an excellent nutritional supplement which every IBDer can always benefit from. So you can feel safe in taking it as it's 100% non-toxic and my GI approved (who happens to be one of the lead researchers for crohns and colitis in Canada.
