I know its cold in some places.  But its getting warm here in the south and I was wondering if anyone knows if its alright to swim with a seton?  i don't want it to get infected!

I have one, and I have the ok from my surgeon to swim with it. I don't think there is really much chance of infection since it has a seton in it. I would be more worried if you had a fistula without a seton where it might be closing and trapping any bacteria that might be in the water. Have fun, and enjoy the warm weaher! We still have snow on the ground! I am so ready for spring!

I swam with mine just a couple weeks after insertion.  Swam every weekday last summer (intending to again this summer) and no problems.  Enjoy!  I was a runner for years but with Crohn's, swimming is perfect.  no jarring on the body to test the guts!
--39 year old female, dx as UC in '04 (1st symptoms in '03), switched to Crohn's in '05
--1 fistula, crohn's colitis, limited to large intestine
--rejected (reaction/didn't work): Asacol, AZA, 6-MP, MTX, Remicade, Humira, prednisone
--stuck on methylprednisolone
--tried Prochymal in Phase III study (can't wait til it's approved!)
--waiting to start Tysabri
--single mom to 10-year-old girl

Check with your doctor first. Your swimability :-) depends on how "clean" your fistula and seton are. If you're discharging a lot, then there's a risk that you'll infect everybody else with your bugs. If your fistula is fairly clean, then you'll have no more impact on public health than a little kid would, pooing in the pool. Lovely thought! Doesn't that do wonders for your self esteem?

I think that you're more likely to get the ok for swimming if you say you'll do it at the beach rather than in a public pool. Anyway, check first, and I hope you'll get the all clear.

I recently got well enough (and approved) to resume swimming myself, and love it... especially as it's so [insert expletive] hot this summer.

ivy thats an interesting point, fistulas are so small one would think the chlorine would kill n e germs that a tiny little fistula could put out. I mean kids pee in the pool all the time lol chlorine can kill that and not a tiny bit of invisible drainage?

Prayingforhealing, I don't know. I'm just repeating what the doctors told me.
