Is it against the rules to paraphrase a news item and comment on it? I went back and reread the rules and couldn't find a rule against it. (I replied to a post this morning and did just that and now it's gone, that's why I'm wondering.)

No. Copying verbatim would be. Can you give us more info, such as the thread title?

Thanks.

Hi skeptical,

I don't know anything about your disappearinig post, but maybe one of your other mods will.

I think it's ok to paraphrase a news item, as long as it is a paraphrase and not a direct quote, and you include the source URL so you don't infringe copyright.

Was your commentary on a Crohn's-related news item, or was it OT? OT posts can be removed at the mods' discretion. Also, it is best not to raise anything too controversial. Once again, that might explain why your post disappeared.

Does this help?

In general it is not against the rules to paraphrase a news item and comment on it. The exceptions to that would be if the article or your comments fit into some other areas. For example, if the article discussed advocating suicide, then it would not be allowed. If the article or your comments were of an overtly religious or political nature then it also would not be allowed.

Was your complete thread removed? Or did you post to another thread? Generally, when I have to edit or remove a post of a longtime member, I explain why either in the edited post or via email.

I don't remember the subject line, but it was about the woman sitting on a toilet seat for 2 years and getting stuck. (Let me just say, I never said anything ugly about her; I did indicate I thought she might have a mental health issue, though)

It wasn't my subject, I just responded to it and it was off topic, kinda. Actually, a mod had already removed it and left a note. I was just responding to the subject line. I thought maybe they had copy/pasted the whole article or maybe put a link to it that wasn't allowed, so I was paraphrasing and saying I'd seen it, too.

Could you give us a link, skeptical? It might still be in the history file on your computer.

I clicked on the link in my history and this is what it took me to..http://www.healingwell.com/community/default.aspx?f=17&m=1068999&p=1

Please don't worry about this anymore. I just was curious why it had disappeared. It's really no big deal. Thanks so much both of you for answering and trying to help.

Hmm. The whole thread has gone, hasn't it?

I don't know, skeptical. Maybe one of the other mods will be able to help you.

I am the mod that edited the post and explained why as it had a link to the news story about the woman stuck on toilet for 2 years.  I posted rule
17. No irrelevant or off-topic posts. Posts which are not relevant to the forum topic may be deleted at the moderator's discretion.

After I edited another member posted they did not know if it was ok to post the article but then paraphased the OT  info so I deleted the topic as rule 17 states I may do.

There was nothing in that article about Crohn's disease and it was a sad story about a vulnerable adult.

IMHO I do believe we are very good about leaving up OT posts that relate back to a problem stemming from CD or jokes as they are good medicine.
I did not mean to  criticize but only keep the site comfortable for all.
