Hey Gumby,
Thanks for checking in. It has been a nightmare week. I had a lumbar puncture because of that fever...then it turned out that the effects of the lumbar puncture were worse than the illness itself. Basically I had a cerebrospinal fluid leak from the LP. Because of the leak, the pressure in my spinal column dropped off precipitously any time I was not lying flat on my back - and pretty much instantaneously I would get a crushing headache and start projectile vomiting. It was like a scene out of "The Exorcist," I'm not kidding. The treatment was a blood patch, where they take 30 cc's of blood from your arm and inject it into the epidural space where the LP was originally done. The blood forms a clot around the hole and everything is hunky-dory again...unless you're a freak of nature like me and the clot disassociates, which mine did on Thursday night, leaving me in the same predicament. But my doc couldn't do another patch until today, so I spent the weekend either lying flat on my back or receiving massive doses of anti-vomiting drugs and Dilaudid at the ER. Finally, at 5 p.m. tonight I saw the anesthesiologist and he did another patch...and I'm back home.

Yeah, it sucked. As a matter of fact, I don't think I have ever felt as helpless, powerless, and in pain as I did over the past week. I am just praying that this patch holds so I don't have to go through all of that again. I would not wish any of that experience upon my worst enemy!

Thanks again for checking in.

Hi Sarita,
So sorry to hear of all you have been through. You don't deserve this! Did they ever figure out why you had the high fevers? Hope you are feeling better soon!

Oh wow you really have been through the ringer lately.  I sure hope you are feeling better soon.  My husband went through a similar spinal puncture about 13 years ago. and it was pure h*&l.  I hope this patch holds for you and that your string of medical misadventures has run its course!

Aww, thanks, my friends - I'm doing great. Thank goodness, the patch held and now I'm getting back into the swing of things (even catching up on my schoolwork). My back is still pretty sore but I really can't complain about that in the grand scheme of things :) Especially since I can take a Percocet for that and get some relief. It's amazing when a medication actually does it's job, isn't it?

I did have problems after being injected with so much pain medication (ranging from morphine to oxycodone to hydromorphone over the course of five days) - I actually became constipated for the first time in my life. I thought I would welcome such a symptom after all these years, but it was horrible. I had to do two Fleet enemas to get things going and was totally miserable. I do not envy those of you with chronic C - I'm much happier with my (relatively) painless diarrhea! Which, of course, has returned, but is currently in the "manageable" range of 3-5 times a day.

As far as the kidneys go, I'm trying not to get worked up about it; the nephrologist ordered a 24-hour urine to check my protein and creatinine levels. He said he might want a biopsy depending on those results, but after this last experience I want to stay as far away as possible from any invasive procedures. So let's hope my proteinuria isn't getting worse. Right now I'm classified as stage 2 CKD, cause still unknown, but I'm just hoping it improves on its own.

Thanks again for the lovely words - you guys have pulled me through this!

Well, that is a relief. Sorry you had to go through that. And I was feeling sorry for myself because my Flu shot missed one of the local strains going around. That you had puts things in perspective!
I'm still concerned about the kidney thing though. I hope you find out soon, without resorting to surgery ( Which was what happened with me, major surgery).
Please take care & try not to overdue it, ok?

Sincerely yourws,
Matthew
