Hey everyone,
I am new to this site. I've had crohn's for a few year's now.  Am currently 26 years old. So frustrated, because I have c diff for the past week and a half.  Had it about 6 months ago, and now it came back. Am taking flagyl for a week and its not doing anything. All out of ideas...so frustrated..Someone suggested drinking KEFIR (its a probiotic drink) Anyone ever tried it? How does it affect you? Will I be able to tolerate it now? PLease help... Any suggestions I will greatly appreciate it..

I have had it twice first time 10 months second time 11 months so I feel your pain. Here is what finally got rid of it. I used Flagyl but I used the PULSING method. You see c-diff is a very sneaky bug, It has the ability to grow/create a shell or armor the minute it detects Flagyl/antibiotics in your system. What pulsing does is you first take Flagyl for 2 weeks straight then the next week you take it for 6 days straight 1 day off then next week 5 days on 2 days off then 4 days on 3 days off you get the picture what happen is that those days off when you are not taking Flagyl the bugs shed their armor and thats when you zap them they start to die little by little.
Google " C-diff Pulsing" and you can find what I am talking about. After pulsing I finally got rid of it ,its been since 2002 no more C-diff and I have taken antibiotics since then.
Some people use Vancomicin but that is a drug you want to save for your last resort most peeps use Flagyl with great success.
Good luck I know how c-diff can make you waste away I got down to 85 pounds at deaths door.

Hi Angiev....so sorry you're not feeling well. Yes, kefir is a fermented drink high in probiotics. I have no idea whether you will be able to tolerate it, but it seems it might be worth a try. All fermented foods (like kefir, high quality yogurt, cabbage, etc.) are recommended in the Maker's Diet. You are right, the probiotics can't hurt and just might help. You can also purchase probiotics in supplement form. Many folks here take them daily whether in remission or not.

Best wishes to you! I sure hope you feel better real soon!!!

Thank you so much for replying to me so fast. I will definitely check out the PULSING method of flagyl. My doctor has actually suggested vancomycin, but you mentioned that its a drug i should use as a last resort?  How come? ( by the way...Any suggestions on what I should eat and drink while battling c diff?)

I had C.diff before crohns and learned alot about the disease. There is a cdiffsupport.org group that you can learn alot about the bug. The bug leaves spores in you intestine that hatch every 3 days. They are there even if you aren't on antibiotics and sometimes antibiotics brings them out. The reason why the pulse/taper methods work is because it kills the spores that hatch each 3 days. Also, you may want to clean the areas in your bathroom with bleach because you could be reinfecting yourself. No other cleaners work against killing the bug or spores. Also, don't forget to wash your hands for a few minutes with WARM, SOAPY water. Purell or hand sanitizers do not kill c.diff. There is also a list of antibiotics that generally cause c.diff on that support group and the least offenders as well. A good probiotic can also help if you are pulsing...VSL#3. Florastor is used in alot of hospitals outside the US to combat c.diff
Good luck
Chris
