Hi All- I'm back here again to let you all know my most recent Crohn's update.
This Monday I went to my Gastro and had a sigmoid done. I am having lots of pressure during intercourse, so I decided to go see him and the Gyno in April. I figured one or the other will tell me what's wrong. Anyways, he checked me out and said that my upper colon looks good. Except for the lower colon near the rectum. He told me I have inflammation of the lower colon (nothing knew I thought) Mild hemorrhoids, nothing to worry about but I actually got to see pics after the procedure and asking many questions. So apparently, during intercourse because both vaginal and anus walls are so close together it causes pressure and pain like what I had described before, like I was splitting in half. He then gave me more medicine Canasa 1000mg (anti-inflammatory suppositories) I was sad

I was also having difficulties going and became constipated prior to going to him. I started taking vitamins about 3 weeks ago and he told me that it wasn't the problem. These are just Crohn's symptoms...either to go too much or you can become constipated. He told me to instead of taking Metamucil to get on Miralux.

Anyways, last night was my first night taking the Canasa, which wasn't so bad, (My pharmacy had a back order so it too so long to get it) It cost me with insurance $84 on top all my other refills. Supposedly it dissolves and coats inflammation and I have to do it for 2 weeks. I thought I was going to be having Diarrhea..Thank God nothing weird happened. But this morning I woke up all drowsy and I am very slow. I read the side effects and some of it says you can even have hair loss...So I freaked and had a mild breakdown last night. I just want to give up is just not fair to be treating my body will all of this meds...I just loose hope at times. I have gotten better but as soon as I stop taking them my stomach starts showing me signs.

Anyways, after the visit, he also informed me that the cramping period pains I am feeling frequently are symptoms of IBS. I thought I only had a IBD and he said that I have both. Every time I go to him he adds something else. And that my Vitamin D is low...hello casue I haven't had dairy in so long...hopefully my vitamins are doing the trick.

Has anyone had this problem before and has been given this type of treatment. Your input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks for listening :-)

Get a new GI Doctor............kidding.  It does seem that your conversations are a bit disjointed.  Your medical record should have your problem list and together you and your physician should be working on that. I am not sure why he keeps adding dx he has not discussed with you.

I know you are upset and anxious about all the meds and treatments being done, that is perfectly natural for you to feel that way.  The next time you visit him, ask him to take the time to go over in detail each dx and what to expect in long term care.

Hugs to you and Happy Easter.

Glad you are getting to the bottom (no pun intended) of your troubles with sex. I have not used the suppositories since my disease is up higher in the terminal ileum and cecum, but they should do you some good soon. They are basically a topical ointment that goes directly to the site of your inflammation. I would not worry too much about systemic effects, since most of the medication flushes out of you and would not be absorbed at the levels you find in taking an oral medication.

Per the discomfort you are experiencing with sexual intercourse, it might be that varying positions would help -- not to get too graphic, but find some positions where less pressure is exerted downward through the vaginal wall to the rectal vault. You can probably figure that without illustrations . . .

I don't have any experience with the Canasa, but hope that it gives you some relief.

As for the period pains, I don't really think its so much caused by IBS, but by the Crohns. I had a complete hysterectomy about 14 years ago, but I can tell you I was always miserable that time of the month. And I think you will find many women complain of having mini flares every month at that time.
And for the Vit D issue, you should as a women, be taking a Calcium supplement daily with Vitamin D. That might help to get your Vit D up.

I just happened to see my GI yesterday and he is also suggesting I use Miralax. I think most of my meds are causing me to lean towards constipation. I currently take stool softners and they help me to stay a little more regular.

And as for the side effects, I know they are scary, but we really need these meds. For the MILD hairloss alot of these drugs can cause, you can take Folic Acid or Biotin supplements to help that.

And my last suggestion, just because you are feeling better, you really should not ever stop any of your Crohns meds (except weaning off steroids). These medications help to keep the inflammation down and keep you in remission (when you reach it). You will always need to take maintenance meds. I only take Asacol, but a doctor told me after my last resection I no longer needed to take it. I quit taking it and wound up getting sick again. Went back on them and have continued taking them and I am back in remission.

Hope that helps.

God Bless,
