Okay so I know that the topic of hair has come up a million times before, but my problem isn't hair loss it's hair gone crazy. For the past 4 - 5 months I've noticed my hair is changing. I'm suddenly getting split ends and white dots (broken hair) and it just seems lifeless. It's not thinning but it has lost body, the texture has changed. I cut my hair every 8 weeks and use really good shampoo and conditioners (which I change off regularly). My nails are also breaking like crazy which started before the whole hair thing. I've also had this bout of eczema and hives since November that only cleared up when I was on iv steroids for 3 days in January (anaphylactic shock) and when I got a tan last month on vacation. My GI ran blood work for all the vitamin deficiencies there are and I'm only lacking in B-12. My friend (a hairdresser) thinks the problem is my medications. I've been on Remicade and 6mp for over a year. I also take synthroid for Hashimoto's and my levels are checked every 3 -6 months and are currently fine. I've been taking Zyrtec and Singulair fairly regularly since November when this whole eczema and anaphalaxsis (sp) thing started in November. Can any of the medications cause these hair issues?

Jodi,

A lot of my hair fell out when I was on prednisone for awhile. It was crazy b/c the hair on the top of my head was falling out, my my facial hair was growing in like crazy!

Now I am on both remicade and prednisone and I've noticed that my hair doesn't necessarily break easily but feels gross and dry. My skin also gets itchy and feels "thinned out" when I'm on the 'roids. My nails are also peely and yucky, so I just constantly paint over them! I got low lights in my hair last year and it really dried out A LOT more than normal and I'm STILL having problems with that. My hair has changed too, it's weird. I hope things work out for you!

I think you might be at the start of hair loss at least the symptoms you are discribing are like mine when it started changing ...are you on folic acid?

That was going to be my question - did they test your folate/folic acid level when they did the other vitamin blood tests?

It could just be your low level of B 12 causing the problem. There was a study done by Tufts in 2001 and hair loss was listed as one of the symptoms of B12 deficiency.

No folic acid. My folate levels are above normal. The only thing I was tested for that came back low was B-12. As for the roids I was only on them for 3 days in January. I refused them when I had anaphylactic shock in November. The only reason I took them in January was because I was admitted to the hospital and not given a choice at the time.

I suffered Hair Loss when I first started on Remicade and Methotrexate, nothing that anyone else would substantially notice but I could tell, then when it grew back it has a mind and feel of it's own. I'm off Methotrexate now and will be curious to see how I do.

After being on Remicade and B12 my hair dresser noticed my hair had returned to it's normal texture and was not breaking as much. Not to mention it was growing back in. Not sure if the B12 injections or the Remicade helped it out. Maybe you will get lucky and the B12 will help it out.

I think your hairloss is from the low B12 and also the 6mp. When I was on 6mp my hair loss was enough for my hairdresser to notice also. The suggestion of folic acid or Biotin will help with the hairloss. I like Kittikatt have curlier hair now too. Mine used to be bone straight, now its really wavy and curly.

I get my first B12 shot next week. I've put it off because I haven't wanted to leave work early just for a shot and then the doc is vacation this week. The docs office wasn't making me rush because I didn't think that I was having any symptons of b12 deficiency, but after doing so research I realize I have a lot of symptons. Headaches, muscle cramps, sores on my tongue and the breaking hair and split ends. I don't really seem to have any noticeable hair loss, my actual hair just doesn't seem to be as thick as it once was. As I've mentioned my folate levels are very high.

So I'm getting my B12 shot on Thursday and chopping off a couple of inches of hair on Friday. I've also asked my hairdresser to get me Nioxin shampoo, conditioner and treatment.
