Have crohns on pentasa, humira, and went back up to steriod 20mg a day now.  Just getting over with having the flu for a week.  Now like uncontrollable diaherra for 6 days.  I get the flu, period and everything at the same time so cant figure out what it is from.  I was just almost off steriod and was doing well for 7 months.  Anyone on any form of birth control pills with being on humira, steriods, and pentasa.  I really and ready to go the pill because when i get my period the days i bleed heavier than the other days my crohns is 100 times worse.  Any opinions or anything would help.  Does anyone else need like birth control to help their bleeding (clots) hormones? tricia

I just want to throw this out there....after I was diagnosised with crohns my periods became so much worse. I was also on the pill the whole time. So, I experimented, and just quite the pill, and to my surprise my periods became so much better. It was unbelievable! During high school and college, I had awful periods, and I would miss school and everything. Now with not being on the pill, they are the best they have ever been, and emotionally I am much more stable. Now, I know this is not the norm, but just thought I would let you know my experience.

I'm not on Humira but am on Cimzia, which is very similar.  Also, not currently on Pentasa and steroids, but was before.  When I was taking the pill (which I also take to keep endometriosis from coming back), my OBGYN was afraid that some of the stomach med I was on (Alkabel, if I remember correctly) made the pill less effective, so it was a concern for both birth control purposes and because my endometriosis could come back.  So, she put me on the Depo Provera shot, which I have been on for several years.  I haven't noticed any problems with it in regards to Crohn's symptoms or Crohn's treatments/meds.  One side effect is weight gain, which I didn't get.  You just get a shot every 3 months and never have a period.  I love it!

I have been on Ortho-Tri Cylclen Lo for a while now and haven't had any problems. HOWEVER.. I was going to start a new thread on this, but I'll just ask here, Do any of you experience more D around the time of your period? Its like the Crohn's symptoms get twice as bad whenever its my time of the month. Its awful!!

misspriss82 i get same thing too. That is why i thinking going on birth control maybe will help. I get diaherra and pain really bad. Sometimes on days i bleed more the pain and nausea, diaherra are worse. Then the lighter days of bleeding arent as much pain. im on pentasa, humira injections and almost off steriod but had to go back up for the last two days. I have been having the flu and the the period like all at the same time. I have no idea how to tell if im having a flare or what. I feel sick thought i was getting better but so hard to tell if the flu or crohns disease. any advice? anyone that has the flu how do you differetiate wtih the crohns.

I was on Ortho-Tri Cyclen low and had to come off of it when I got CD b/c it made my flares worse and just made me feel worse in general. I feel better now that I'm not on birth control, but am tired of the inconvenience of having to use contraceptives with my hubby.

I'm on Remicade and 6mp. I take Seasonique..the pill where you only get you period 4 times per year. While I do poop a lot more when I do get my period; my period only comes four times per year and lasts for about 4-5 days each time. I'm so happy I'm thinking of looking into the new pill (I think its call Lybrel) where you don't get a period ever.

Same thing happens with me. Menstrual Cycle Diarrhea. diarrhea gets worse at that time of the month. I read that is because of the ebb and flow of the hormones can cause constipation and diarrhea. and also, the body retains excess water which causes diarrhea, bloating, swelling and tension.Ya'll Take Care. I was on the pill for about six years, always the lowest dosages (Desogen or Alesse). Eventually I ended up with liver damage and spent four days in the hospital. I also developed a huge ovarian cyst, which is not supposed to be possible.
Considering that Crohn's already makes one prone to blood clots and liver problems, I would recommend at least taking a long time to think about it. If you do decide to try it, and you don't already test your liver enzyme levels, then discuss doing so with your doctor. Just my $0.02.
Also, I found that as soon as I stopped taking the pill, the terrible cramps and heavy bleeding I experienced as a teen never came back--even now, almost ten months after stopping. So I think there is an age-related element at least for some people.
