Hello to all! I have not posted in a long time but read everyday.I am sorry if this has been asked I tryed reading to find the answer to my question and did not find one.I had a sbft yesterday, what I thought was going to take awhile was finished in a little over an hour. Question is I had D the rest of the day and hurt in severl different place all day. Even this morning I am still in some pain. I have never had one before but if anything was expecting to worry about the big C not having D. I barely made it home before it started and I was hoping someone could tell me if this is common after a sbft. The Dr. asked me twice during last pictures if I was having pain where the machine was laying and was I having D. The answer was no to both at that time. Just looking to find out if anyone has had this happen before. Thanks for your time and my best to everyone.

Hello Grammy,

I know I felt sick for a day and a half afterward. Just plain "toxic"! I think it was the barium that caused me to feel down right ill. I definitely had D and ran a small fever. I drank lots of water to try to flush the stuff out of my system. Mine went quickly too becasue I didn't have much in me. I had the colonoscopy on Wednesday and the SBFT on Friday. Yuck!!!

I really hope you feel better very soon!! Did they find anything?

I usually have trouble making it home before the D starts. So you are not alone. Sometimes it takes awhile for the Barium to move through me to where they want it for the pictures, but once it gets there, oh boy, watch out! I usually put some old towels in the car to sit on just in case.

And as far as not feeling well, barium and I don't get along. I am sick for several days after any barium test. It has even put me in the hospital a couple of times when I was really sick to begin with. So you are not alone there either.

Just be glad its the weekend and you can take it easy. Your body has been through enough, just treat yourself kindly today and tomorrow. Drink lots of fluids, rest, take a nice long tubby time, maybe use a heating pad and read a guily pleasure book or trashy magazine. Just generally play hooky from life this weekend! Hope you feel better soon and that they got the test results they needed so that you don't have to have anymore nasty barium in the near future!

Thank you for your replies. I was dx with crohns four years ago and things have been under control but I have been having pain higher on the right side and pain high in my stomach, more up at the chest when I try to eat. I have never had the small bowel looked at so my primary thought now would be a good time.

I'm still not feeling to good today. I won't be doing that again real soon. I read that they use a sulfa based barium does anyone know if this is true. I am very alergic to sulfa. Could this be the problem with it?

thanks again, donna

I am also allergic to sulfa. I don't think that barium is sulfa based. But I could be wrong. Now I'm going to have to go do some research. But it would seem to me that since it is in my medical records as an allergy they couldn't give it to me without at least letting me know.

I'm going to have a SBFT next month and was just about to start a topic when I saw this :)

For the people that had D after the procedure, did you have D before or did the barium cause it?
Did any of you have to do a bowel prep before? I was told that I'm not supposed to eat or drink after midnight the night before. I thought I'd have to do a prep for it?

I have to fly out of town to get mine done and since it's one of those rare opportunities I have to be somewhere with a Wal-Mart or "real" grocery store I'd planned to do some shopping.. If I'm going to be having some major D that might put a damper on things :-/
Current:
Dx: Crohn’s Ileitis as of 22/02/08
Rx: Salofalk 4g/day (26/02/08)
9mg Budesonide (one capsule 3 times per day for the next 6 weeks)

Discontinued meds:
Asacol 2.4g
Pentasa 4g

I have D always, but the barium makes it worse. SBFT usually doesn't require a prep, just nothing by mouth after midnight. Some people find the barium will cause C so if you have never had barium before it may be a bit of a crap shoot (pun intended). You can be assured that Wal-Mart will have facilities available if you need them, so you should be all right. But I probably wouldn't go to a mall or some place where the facilities might not be readily available or at the other end of the mall.

Thank you all for the input. I'm still hurting tonight. I guess I just did not expect to feel like this. I guess I just need to wait and see what they found out if anything. Thanks for the help.

Be well, donna
