hi all As many of you know I have had 4 CD related Sxs since 2-07. I had a temp ostomy then had it reversed in 6-07. The CD remanifested in my colon (the ostomy Sx was due to emergency resection complications which was 1 week prior). In 9-07 i had an enterocutaneous fistual break thru the skin. After trying all other methods to fix it another Sx was needed it was 1-08.  I had post Sx compliocations (lieus again which is what gave me the ostomy the 1st time but it was caught fast enough to just get me an NG tube for 5 days.

I now have 1/4 of my large bowel and have been having pain recently whereas even 1 month post op I had no pain at the anastamosis site it was limited to the wound infection pain.  Ever since the first BM I passed post op and all the gas since this last Sx the odor is so foul and I cannot place it on anything imparticular.  I dont recall having such a foul odor after the other surgeries including when I had the ostomy bag to empty...granted I used m9 drops when I had that but I had 6.5 months after the reversal until this most recent Sx

I cannot pin it on any particular food since this has occurred even while on the hospital clear diet.  When I have a BM the odor lingers for a minimum of 1 hour but usually 3 hours.  Luckily I was approved for SSDI so I am usually at home to use my own toilet.  When I go it always is accompanied by lots of gas or it blasts out of me.

I knwo the D is normal post op but what about the odor?

Do you take any probiotics? You could have an uneven level of bacteria causing the stench.

i take acidophilis and align which has 2 types of probiotics. he told me i would take it for 2 weeks and if that was the issue it would help. Unfortunately it didnt help. There is no sulfur in my meds like way back when...when I was on Azulfadine

It could be any of your meds. Are you on any new meds? Did any of the manufacturers changes or go generic? I have noticed changes in odor when I have been put on new meds or different brands. Just throwing it out there. It also could just be your body is still under an icredible amount of stress, you've really been through the ringer lately, and maybe your body is taking it out on your nose!

no new meds in over a year. I did just hear back from my GI I called for a cpl reasons and he did say both my sed rate & crp were elevated on 3-117 so he feels as though we chose the right thing as far as bringing my humira back to my old dose of 1 shot per week.

My first idea was yeast in your gut. The smell is the fermentation and the gas is the release if the bacteria. Have you been checked for yeast. Also toxic mega colon comes to mind.

i waas on daily 200 mg of diflucan even after this last Sx. I only hhave 1/4 of my colon left my 1st bout of ileus after my 1st Sx I had a form of toxic megacolon. The odor was even occuring post-op and after the ileus this time too. Even when i used thr toilet rather than the comode the hallway would smell a 2 door down radius. I would open the bathroom window and shut the door to help air out the area and the staff new it was me with just a walk down the hall.

Do you have diarrhea ? if so C-diff has a very nasty strong smell. Has your stool been checked for that? c-diff is common after bowel surgery and from taking antibiotics. You can get a kit from the doc to save some stool and have it checked. C-diff also creates lots a stinky gas .

In september I was tested then again 2 times in November. The hospital I use tests all its patients for c-diff, VRE and other feces transmitted diseases with your 1st BM. I will probably have D for a long time if not forever since I only have 1/4 of my colon left. Questran didnt change I would still go 1-8 times a day no matter what I eat and the odor is the same no matter what I eat

Well you have had another surgery since November, so why not get checked for the C-Diff? That was what I was alluding to when I asked if you take probiotics. I think another stool test should be run.

At the hospital they did retest for C-diff after my Sx and eveerything coming out of me then is the same as now including consistancy and odor and it was neg. I was VRE pos after my ostomy Sx from the wound infection and abd abscess being fed by my stoma area which didnt heal right. In those cases here they do not consider you to be neg until 3 neg results come in if you were previously pos. So yes I have been tested after my most recent Sx too.
