I'm looking for new IV pain meds for the hospital. I'm allegic to Demerol and Morphine. Last night they gave me Dilaudid and it gave me a whopper of a headache and I was iching all over, so I think that's going on the allergy list too. At the hospital I go to, Fentanyl can only be given on the Med/Surg floor, so that's out. Any other options? Oh and I can't change hospitals, due to my insurance.

You are having a heck of a time, aren't you... I'm so sorry!
I'm sure someone will chime in with another suggestion, but in the mean time...
Morphine makes me itchy too, but I just ask them to pump some benadryl in there while they're at it, and that usually takes care of the unpleasant itchies. I may have a more minor reaction to the morphine than than you though... I don't know.
I hate taking more medicine to counter-act other medicine, but if you're in pain... a little sleepiness from the benny might not be a bad thing with the morphine or whatever... Again, I don't know exactly what kind of a set-up you're in, but it's just a thought.

Doing pretty darn good, all things considered. :-)

I was going to suggest the same. I get crazy from Compuzine so I got benadryl and ativan and compuzine last time I went in - and slept for about 24 hours.

I've gotten Toradol a few times - once when I had my wisdom teeth taken out and once when I had a migraine and didn't want demerol.
For some people, toradol works really well but the second time I took it, it didn't work at all.

Might be worth looking in to.
Current:
Dx: Crohn’s Ileitis as of 22/02/08
Rx: Salofalk 4g/day (26/02/08)
9mg Budesonide (one capsule 3 times per day for the next 6 weeks)

Discontinued meds:
Asacol 2.4g
Pentasa 4g

If you are using a narcotic on a regular basis, I.E., Vicodin............do not let anyone give you Toradol as it will throw you into withdrawal sx immediately. I have seen this happen.

Toradol  is a good medicine if your not using a lot of oral pain meds.

Nubain may be worth talking to the ER physician about.  You are in a tough spot as the top guns are not working for you.

I hope you get more suggestions.

Hugs

I take percocet by mouth at home, so I have a high tolerance for pain meds. I am allergic to compazine, but its an anti-nausea not pain med. Isn't Toradol an NSAID? This is why I get so confused and just take what they tell me to, but then they try to give me things I'm allergic to.

Itching is a common reaction to Dilaudid. Before taking it, try taking an antihistimine first. I get extremely itchy if I don't take a Zyrtec before I get dilaudid. Take care.

Current Meds include:Sulfasalazine and Zofran. With a new doctor, forced to retry all the meds that haven't worked in the past :(

Toradol is an nsaid, they described it to me as "liquid advil", but unless you are having internal bleeding it should be safe for you to take since it bypasses your digestive system.  I had surgery and they were giving me toradol every 6 hours for 2 days, they said you shouldn't really be on it longer than a couple days because your blood might thin out too much and cause post-surgical bleeding when you wouldn't otherwise have it.  Pretty safe though if you are not bleeding already when you start it.

I loved that stuff though, it reduced a lot of the pain and swelling and joint stiffness I was having and it didn't make me feel pukey or loopy or anything like other pain meds do.  Sometimes they were like 45 minutes late with the shot and I was like "ahhhhhhh where's my shot, gimme gimme" tongue   never bad enough to press the nurse call button though.

I'm suppose to go back to the hospital tonight if things haven't cleared, which they haven't, but I don't want to. They have no pain meds they can give me. They think I'm just drug seeking and I'm exhausted from being sent home at 3:30AM last night. They didn't even keep an IV going in me last night. They clearly thought I was just there for the drugs. Little did they know I had better stuff at home!

I kept refusing the pain pills they offered to send me home with and still they didn't get it. And they kept trying to give me stuff that I'm allergic to. Thank God I was allert. But, I just don't want have the strength to deal with them tonight unless I start throwing. Then I guess I really won't have a choice.

Toradol is the strongest thing I have ever used it made me so loopy I was completely out of it for about 14 hours. Then I spent the next six or so hours thinking that if I wanted to be an addict that would be my drug of choice it was so awesome. (As you can tell I don't handle pain meds well)
It's not even a narcotic-just an NSAID
