Ok so I just switched to Protonix in the morning with a Zantac at night, Pentasa as usual and I am taking biotin and birth control.  So as I said earlier my acid reflux had been acting up.  Well I just ate lunch, took my pentasa and the biotin (which is powder in a capsule).  So 10 minutes or so later, I burp and since I am at work I kept my mouth closed to keep it somewhat quiet.  SMOKE came pouring out of my nose.  I thought something under my desk was on fire for a second.  After checking all my wires I realized it came from my burp.  The most logical explanation would be that I burped up my biotin powder.  But seriously, what else could that be? Has anyone ever had that happen? Thank GOD no-one was nearby to see.  I couldn't hide that.  It looked like I inhaled a ciggarette and breathed out my nose.  Weird.

so I just spoke with my dad the chemist and he thinks it was just the powder. But he was also concerned that there could have been a chemical reaction between the pentasa the biotin and the stomach acid since I took them all at the same time. My nose does burn but anytime you have a bad burp it will burn. I am sure biotin isn't meant to be snorted anyway so my nose might just sting from that. Boy am I basket case. I have to interview a witness in 2 minutes so I am glad the smoke coming out of my nose is done.

Wow, what an incredible party trick! All the same, I don't think I'd want to experience that more than once. I think your dad is probably right about an interaction. Often when two drugs interact, the advice is to take them 2 hours apart. However, not knowing the nature of this particular interaction, nor how long-lasting it is, I think I might check with the doctor and/or pharmacist and see whether you should still take the biotin.

Perhaps you could reproduce the interaction by crushing one Pentasa pill and one Biotin pill, mixing them together, and then dissolving a little bit of the powder in water to see what happens. If nothing does, you might also try dissolving the powder in something acidic like vinegar to try and replicate your stomach acid. But I think if I were going to try anything like this, I would try and wear some eye wear, and maybe work outside -- or perhaps your dad can help you with this if he has access to a laboratory and protective eyewear/chemical hoods, et cetera. When you try and recreate an interaction, you never know what the results may be!

Anyway, I hope there is no lasting discomfort.

PS: I made a baking soda and vinegar volcano with my little nephew last year. But I think he'd be even more impressed if I could breathe fire and smoke!

Why are you taking the biotin? I know most people take it to make their hair grow or their nails. But there is a side effect to this you might not want.

Oh my, I'm so glad noone was around too to see that. I would bet it was the powder from the pill. Do this....take one of your pills with powder in it, break it open, smell it! If it has the same smell as what came out of your nose, it was probably the pill. Actually, this sounds like something that would happen to me. Let me know if you do this as I'm curious if I'm right. You have to admit, this is comical on some level.

Just be glad it came out your nose and not another orifice that is frequently mentioned on this forum . . .

Oh I agree it is funny! I did laugh. Red- I am taking it because my hair is thinning/falling out from some combination of diet/meds. Is this the side effect you were referring to or is there another one? Do tell.

I have psoriasis and when I took it to help my nails it caused a flare of my skin. Have to remember that it is all the same thing, my fear at this point would be that it could cause a flare, because the ulcers we deal with are an overgrowth of skin. See the point. I don't know for sure about the inside but I have personally delt with the outside problem. Good luck.

Hey Fitzy you said your acid reflux is acting up alot lately. I just wanted to share with you when I took Biotin it tore my stomach up really bad and had to quit taking it. Maybe thats what causing the Acid Reflux. Just a thought.

Too many things cause my own reflux, however if I could belch smoke & even fire, what a NEAT party trick! Just think you'd be the talk of the party all night. Unless everyone was smoking or something..

Nanners- thanks, I might try laying off it for awhile. I seriously think I have an ulcer where my esophugus meets my stomach. It is really sore all the time. My doc wants to upper scope me but I really cant do it till the semester is over. He said there is no rush because even if it was an ulcer it would be treated the same way they are treating my reflux since I don't have h-pylori. It is frustrating to know I have almost run out of options.

Oh my gosh, I wondered what this post was about. How freaky. Take care of yourself and get some good information about this from your pharmacist! Oh and you might want to carry a fire extinguisher! LOL

My good friend 61yrs old called to tell me that at work she was talking to a coworker when what appeared as white smoke started coming out of her chest,  she thought her ID badge was on fire.  When she removed it and put it on her desk, then the same white smoke came out of her mouth and nose.  Her coworker witnessed it too.  Both were shocked!  He asked how she had done that.  She was very scared she was not sick, and finished her work for the day.  Office assistant is her position.  She has no idea of what happened to her.  Does any one else????

I couldn't imagine what this post was about. lol My first thought was that inflammation in the nose wouldn't cause smoke. ;) That would probably startle me too! But no doubt you brought up some of that powder. Glad you're gonna lay of that stuff for a while. Sounds like it's hard on the tummy.
