How expensive is this test and how is it done?  Bloodwork, I presume?  My white count and sed rates looks outstanding right now but my joint pain continues and I am growing very weary on this topic.

The GP did a RA test on me about 2 years ago which was negative and my GI says, "just normal wear & tear". BS! My shoulders, neck, lower back, knees and hands hurt every single day to the point just tylenol is not relieving it. This is the most common reason for me popping a percocet.

I've reduced the sugars in my diet, making sure also that I keep everything moving and stretch as much as I can during the day.  I feel there is a possibility of AS creeping up on me or maybe some toxins building up in the joints...however, my kidneys are fine as well.
Glucosamine helps some but not enough.

I am frustrated with this and see the GI tomorrow for a checkup and the GP the following week for a checkup.  The thing that really gets my goat is that the GI's husband is a rheumy.

My insurance doesn't require a referral to see a specialist.  I made sure that I pay for that option and I'm considering exercising it with someone other than the GI's husband.

What are your opinions on my next move?

I think seeing another rheumy is a good idea. My recent knee surgery was for a painful knee that supposedly was just related to Crohns. My meniscus in my knee had a serious tear that had to be repaired. My Rheumy was the one to finally order the MRI and now I am on the repair.
Been living with Crohn's Disease for 32 years.  Currently on Asacol, Prilosec 60 mg, Estrace, Prinivil, Diltiazem, Percoset prn for pain and Calcium.  Resections in 2002 and 2005.  Recently diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and doing tests to see if I have Inflammatory Arthritis or AS.

Hi Broom Did you have a bone scan done? The pred. can be hard on a person I went off that today. My back has been not too good so I am going to sit less in this chair. Is your job a sitty one? Not able to recomend anything other then a nice swim might loosen you up. Hope you have some sucess with your Dr. appointments I got a couple coming up this week. Never heard of that test so maybe someone with some info will jump in. lol gail

The test for HLA-B27 is a smiple blood draw. As to cost, I don't have a breakdown from when mine was drawn. I did a quick search and found a lab in Colorado that chraged $63.00 in 2006. Your insurance should cover the cost of the test given you have CD and joint pain.

Thanks Ides- I just noticed in another post that you had AS. I can't believe they wouldn't order a $63.00 test for me...heck, I'd pay cash for that to just ease my mind! What therapy are you on for the AS? I assumed it would be about the same as for the CD as far as anti-inflamatory meds go. Did you ever have the butterfly rash on your face? I have some sort of dry rash on my checks and across the bridge of my nose as well but just thought it was my psorasis, just not as plaquey (if that's even a word).  Who knows, maybe I'm on the wrong track all together.  I've had a shoulder adhesion, 2 episodes of connective tissue rib pain...maybe it's in the tendons & ligaments and not the joint itself.  Except for the knee thing...I'm pretty convinced it's the joint there.

Nanners-The way my right knee grinds when I am on steps and the shooting sharp pain behind the knee cap when I stand tells me I already need a MRI on that joint. Seen to many of the same symptoms that my husband had not to feel I'm headed for knee surgery at some point. My son graduated in physical therapy. He checked the knee out over the weekend and felt about the same as me. How's your PT going?

Gail- Yes, I had insisted on a base line bone scan before going on the pred and have had one 3 months ago. I've lost considerable bone density over the last year of pred and the GP put me on monthly Boniva. Yes, I do have a desk job and I do a lot of sewing, craft and yard work. I wish my skin could tolerate the chlorine in a pool again! I used to be a very good swimmer and I'm sure it would be excellent passive exercise for my joints! Sigh....It's just so frustrating some days isn't it. Good luck with your Dr. appts. too! Has the surgeon released you yet?

Hi Broom Reading your post and thinking gee your bones have suffered some from the CD . How long did you take pred.? A person needs to keep a good eye on the bones. Your knee doesn't sound the best but having a son who is a therapist sounds great. Went to one Dr. today and had good results ,eyes are coming better now too. I have a GI app. tomorrow just routine ,my bllod work is good so all is encouraging. How did your door painting go? I am now in the process of doing the kitchen cupboards. I must sat they are looking good. Keeping my teen busy sure great to get help.Never heard of Beniva is it a calcium supplement? Yes some days can be harder then others ,How long have you had the rash? What is your Dr. saying about it? Take care and let me know how your doing .lol gail

Gail- I had been on the pred at various dosages from 5mg-60mg since July 2006. I have been off it for about 7 weeks now. The thing that's got me stumped is I am on the max dose of Humira & as much of the Imuran as my body can handle. Both drugs in combination are the most current therapy used for arthritis....so why the heck are my joints still hurting!

Saw the GI today and she did an xray of my hands for RA. It was negative. She also felt I'm well beyond any withdrawal effects of the pred. So...she has referred me to her husband which is a Rheumy. My appt. isn't until the end of May so meanwhile I continue the tylenol which takes the edge off but that's about it.

As for the Boniva it's one of those drugs given to strengthen the bone density. I believe it's in a class called bio-phosphates. Someone correct me please if I have mistated this.

The rash on my face started about 3 weeks ago. Just after I got my latest psorasis flare under control. Ugh!

As to the painting it's on hold until my pain level subsides some more. I'm so glad your eyes are better and bloodwork is good! Your lucky to have help with that teen of yours. Sounds like they are very attentive to you. I miss my guys being around so much. Empty nest syndrome...but I think we've adjusted pretty well overall.

I just hate not being able to tell the recently married son "that I miss him". That would be such an unfair guilt trip!

Let me know how the GI trip goes tomorrow!

Had the hands xrayed today and it only shows "narrowing'?, but no damage. Off for a rheumy appt. in late May. I'm beginning to think connective tissue problem?

Hi Broom Didn't make the GI app. was cancelled. I know it must be lonely when the kids move out I am on my own after mine goes and it is not a happy thought.Cain't imagine why your having the pain but I'am thinking of e-mailing my back to you so you can take it to the Rheumy with you .Had a nap today getting worn out a little from the painting had the body in positions it hasn't been in for years. So going slow in fact I have more to do tonight and it will be pushing it.I been off the pred. since Monday and not loving it yet . I have a rash at times here and thier I think it's from the Imuran which is the only med I'am on for the CD . Keep healthy and hope you get to feeling better soon.lol gail

Yeah, it's still on the face. Been using some of the maintence steriod cream the derm gave me. Can't use the real strong steroid cream on my face or anywhere there is a lymph node. Pretty scary. I also have a type of rash from time to time that I fondly refer to as chicken skin. Can't really see it but to touch feels like little raised bumps on my chest, neck, inner and back of thighs. Some freaky stuff with that one?! I'm sure there's someone waiting to make a crack about that too! Go ahead....I do have a sense of humor. I don't know what drug could be causing the rash(es). I didn't realize Imuran could be one.

I know exactly what you're talking about with your belly. I was the same way. Was real glad to get the staples out too...de_frankenstiened!
