Any suggestions would be appreciated....I caught my son's cold and everytime this happens I end up with a horrible sinus infection.  Does anyone who takes imuran have this problem too?  If so, what do you take.  I can't get to the doctor today (office closed on Thursdays) and I feel like my head just might explode.  It's going to be a long day.  Thanks for your help in advance.

We use a saline wash that you can buy over the counter. It loosens things up and gets it moving. I would go look up the name but my hubby is sleeping, check back. It's inexpensive and it comes with little packets. It was suggested on a popular t.v. show. Feel better!! Oh and I use neosporine in my nose when I'm know family members are sick, try to keep from getting their illness.

Good morning Honeschoolmom,

Sorry to hear your head might explode!! ;-) I've been there way too many times and it is truly miserable. I take Sudafed Sinus Headache. I also put my head over a bowl of steaming hot water and breath in the steam. Or take a long, hot, steamy shower. This helps open up ithe sinuses a little and lets the stuff out. Drink something hot and soothing like tea, and keep your throat coated with throat/cough drops.

Even with all this, you still need antibiotics for a sinus infection. I hope you get into your Dr ASAP!. Maybe there is a physian on call??

I use Tylenol Sinus. My fam doc suggested the saline nose sprays.

The sinus rinse is by a company called NeillMed, available at most phramacies. Easy to use and very effective.

Be careful using antibiotics. You may open a whole can of worms taking unneccesary antibiotics, especially if you already have gut problems. The MAYO clinic has found that most sinus infections are fungal related, and not bacterial. So, antifungals may work better. I think saline nose sprays are worth a try.

Thanks everyone!  I had some tylenol sinus at home....was afraid to try it because I am feeling like I'm in
a flare right now.  After reading your posts through my blurry eyes I decided to give it a try.  It has helped alot, still have the headache, but much more tolerable.

kim123:  I know, I hate to take antibiotics, it always makes me feel worse than I did before!  I will ask about the anti-fungal instead. Thanks!

FallColors:  Thanks, the "Dr." on call for my PCP is the very same one who for years insisted I "only had IBS" easy for him to say and would not send me to a specialist (with my insuracne at the time I had to have a referral).  He finally 'allowed' me to see a specialist after one horrible office visit.  I told him I needed to see a specialist; was tired of throwing up or running to the bathroom; or doing both at the same time 4-6 times a day.  He nicely told me "Well, IBS won't kill you I'm handling it."  That was it!  i told him "It will if I put a #@$%^&* gun to my head."  I wasn't serious, but he thought I was.  Needless to say, left on bad terms and wouldn't trust him anyhow.  So, I'll wait until tomorrow.  Sorry for the long response...just wanted to make sense why I wouldn't go to the on call Dr.

Does anyone out there on Imuran have trouble getting over viruses?  My GI says that imuran doesn't do that.  But I know that everytime I get sick anymore it takes forever to get better and I get the virus far worse than anyone in my house.  Just curious.

Thanks for your quick responses, I was really suffering this morning.

It varies from patient to patient, but my GI told me when I went on 6mp (same basically as imuran) that he sees more and slightly worse colds, upper respiratory infections, etc. in his 6mp/imuran patients than the norm, which makes sense, because the way they work is to slightly tone down our immune systems. A tradeoff for also toning down the runaway immune response in CD I suppose.

Homeschool mom, hang in there. I know how difficult it is to homeschool your children, especially when you aren't well. I homeschooled my two girls for years, mostly because their panick attack and flashbacks were so frequent and severe, that we could barely leave the house.
I have chronic sinusitis..... hot steam, warm packs and pressure points work well for me. The pressure points for your sinuses are: 2 right beside your eyes but on your nose.... 2 over your brow, 2 mid-point on your cheekbones, and 2 right behind the back of your head...if you feel around you will feel a little indentation mid point on either side of lower part of your head...you have to bend your head for this. you press on these points with good hard thumb pressure. It'll hurt. But sometimes you can actually feel your sinuses draining if you are doing it right.
If all else fails, I use Robitussin with expecterant. The expecterant loosens mucous. I swear the minute I get another infection, my sinuses turn to cement.
I do have to go on an antibiotic about once a year, springtime. ...but that usually leads to another CD flare.... its the least of the evils that wins.
Good luck. sure hope you are feeling better really soon.
Lots of liquids, chicken noodle soup...and rest if you can manage it.
God bless,
Mary

Thanks so much everyone!  The people on this forum are the best!  You have all been so helpful.  My head doesn't hurt as bad this morning, but have been in the bathroom 10 times in the last two hours. Urrrrrr!  But like Marie-Claire said the lesser of two evils....  I needed the tylenol sinus med yesterday, refused to go see the so called Dr. on call for my regular PCP.  Today i am going to go just to make sure it's not a sinus infection brewing!  I don't want to wait, because if I get worse over the weekend then I'm in trouble.  On a more minor note yesterday I also developed this huge, lovely cold sore under my nose.  Great!

If I am a rock, then so is everyone else that has the need to be on this site!  I do what I have to do each and every day just like the rest of you!  Some days it's alot harder than others...but I have been dealing with this DD for 36 years.  It sure is nice to finally have a place to go and find out that I am not crazy and my symptoms are indeed real.   Thanks Again!

I've recently had success with a neti pot. They are available at many pharmacies. Especially since there was an Oprah segment on it a few months ago, LOL.

http://www.sinucleanse.com/netipotlanding.htm?source=google&group=neti&campaign=1

It's kind of weird, but it's like a saline rinse that you pour from a special little pot into one nostril, and it comes out the other nostril, cleaning things out. It takes a few times to get the hang of it, but it really helps with the sinus pressure.

Hope you feel better soon!

broomhilda-that sounds like me. Only I use warm air humidifiers-I keep four of them running in my house during sinus season. I drape a towel over my head to trap the steam and breathe until things loosen up. The banging the head on the wall stays the same.
