for those who have been Dx with IBS in addition to your CD what do you do for the IBS? my ~= mentioned an antispasm med but forgot to givee me a script. I have ABD pain mainly at the site of my anastanosis area...in the vicinity. If I have a bm not to long after eating I am usually ok abd pain wise. More recently Ii will have 5-7 boughts of D thru the day however I (w/in the last cpl weeks especially) i dont have a bm after dinner so I remain in pain until I have a bm. This is when I find I have the most gas.& gas pains. my belly in the crampy are is even tender to the touch. I am in pain tonight and I ate baked white fish for dinner.

I also have IBS along with crohns...I had the crohns for over a decade before the IBS hit, my GI explained that it's common for IBS to appear especially after many yrs of IBD with alot of flaring (of course that's not the only way it'll happen, apparently the most common he said).

Both my GI and 2 family docs told me that IBS can be controlled with fibre (which is why my GI told me to take fibre supplements daily for the rest of my life) and exercise regularly, which I do as well....this has helped both my CD and IBS, not remission but definitely better than it was before exercising and not taking fibre supplements (or at least eating enough fibre daily).

what forms of fiber do you consume? I have oral allergy syndrome so I become more and more limited to what fruits and veggies I dont get anaphalactic reactions with. I tried metamucil since this last Sx witno help...I love spinach salad etc but I pay for it later. I dont like many veggies in their cooked state or they dont agree with me.

How long did you try the metamucil for? It can take some time for the body to adjust, it took me 3 months and it was wellllllllll worth it.

I use prodiem stool bulker/fibre therapy, it's widely available in Canada, but seems to be only in a few states, stick with the supplements if you don't tolerate fibreous foods well...the key is taking it daily and indefinitely and with plenty of water...the excess gas and bloating is part of the adjustment and will subside, I no longer have any bloating and only very minimal gas anymore and I'm still taking it daily.

I'm even able to tolerate fibreous foods now without getting all gassy and bloated (which was the only issues I ever had with fruit and veggies, some of them anyways).

Hi. I have IBS on top of Crohn's. I've been taking Imipramine and Bentyl for the pain that my doctor thinks I've been having from the IBS. I'm supposed to take fiber as well, like benefiber. I'm not sure how they realized that it was IBS, except for I was having pain when the inflammation was somewhat under control from the Crohn's.

If I can answer any questions, let me know.

I have ibs and crohns as well. What worked for me was hyosycomine. It's an anti spasmatic and it worked pretty well. I hope that helps :)

Hi I had IBS for 27 years before being DX with CD .I haven't had time to think about it much I follow low fibre diet and that seems to help with the pain as I haven't had any since my resection. Not on any meds right now . For me just having a BM everyday helps I guess I used to have D alll the time and was hard to go anywhere but with the CD meds it helped me alot . Dicetel is one drug for IBS. Bad enough for us to have one thing without dealing with 2 but I guess a person adjusts to it. lol gail

I have duscovered that I must make myself have 3 bms a day with metamucil and glycolax or my pain is awful. another fiber I have tried is called Ultra Fiber Max. I got it through my naturopath and it was very nice stuff. but I tolerate (and love)metamucil, twice a day.
48 y/o woman.  Diagnosed 4/06 after colonscopy, SBFT, CT-scan all showed crohns. 3 months later, after pred and remicade, all tests showed no crohns. December '06 had adhesions cut through a laparoscopy. Now taking Glycolax, Ultra Fiber Plus, Florastor, and DHEA. Have become gluten-free diet per naturopath's tests.

When I'm told I also have IBS, I always think to myself, "well of course my darn bowel is irritated, you would be too if you had
to put up with what that goes through".

I do often wonder if they tell us that, because they've run out of things to say, but that's not demeaning those that actually do suffer
with IBS. It's just that my IBS usually turns out to be a flare, which is what I tell the doc in the first place!!

I agree Dunny - once we have an IBD diagnosis I blame it all on that. None of this IBS crap, no pun intended. I think for us, they are one.

Well, I might argue here that they are two separate issues..."Irritable Bowel" is quickly being researched up the wazoo (literally and figuratively) and there's evidence that the neuronal connection to the gut is mightily more complicated than we originally thought. So it is possible to have IBS and IBD at the same time. Luckies!

I take hysosciamine for my crohns. I find it helps when I have mild cramping and discomfort.

I've had CD for 21 yrs now. I've also suffered thru the gas and unbearable distention. I saw a Neurogastroenterologist who performed an "EKG" of my gut to prove to me that I also had IBS "post IBD". He explained that since I've had surgeries that subsequently disrupted the nerves to my gut, I developed IBS. He described the syndrome as seizures of the gut. He encouraged me to try Naturopathic remedies: omegas, vits, yoga and positive thinking. Also prescribed Klonopin to soothe the gut and anxieties. Think of it this way: the gut is innervated by the largest nervous system. And in that system are neurotransmitters that work with the same "chemicals" that control our moods and other body functions. So, if our gut in not working well...then our whole organisms fails to work at optimum. We cant' fix the IBS problem, but we can try to focus on healing our gut so that the organism can acheive balance. As far as the misfirings of the gut, I have tried meditating and it is awesome. I'm sorry that I get lengthy but I sorta get carried away.

When I was younger I had issues with re-occurent yeast infections and neither RX or OTC meds worked for them anymore, so my GP at the time told me to use plain yogurt and it worked like a charm...thankfully since being on probiotics daily I no longer get yeast infections nor do I get mouth sores (from having CD)...those are my suggestions for you drangonfly, good luck!
