I just found out I am pregnant and my husband is on 6mp.   We planned on children but not yet.  We are scared.  Any advice, we hear different stories about birth defects..  Thank You Rowin

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR PREGNANCY! That is exciting news.

I don't have any info for you on how 6mp might affect the quality of sperm. However, let me tell you that as far as studies on women go: Women who take 6mp during pregnancy have NO GREATER INCIDENCE of birth defects/complications than women who do NOT take 6mp. Because of that, doctors are not keeping pregnant patients on 6mp when the benefits outweigh the risk.

Since 6mp could potentially have a more direct effect on a pregnant woman and yet, has not proven to be a serious risk, my guess would be that it *probably* has less affect on sperm and you have good reason to expect the best outcome.

I made a HUGE typo!!! I should have written: Because of that, doctors ARE keeping pregnant patients on 6mp when the benefits outweigh the risk.

Hope that didn't confuse you.

I stopped 6mp last September b/c my wife and I were trying to get pregnant. She's still not pregnant, but about 3 weeks ago my symptoms really started to come on and I lost some weight so I've decided to start the 6Mp again. From what I've read and from what my GI tells me, the risk is extremely remote. There have been studies done on males and pregnancy. I believe one found that there was an increased risk but none of the other studies have found this. So it seems safe to me. If they are keeping women on 6MP then it's probably fine for males.

If I were you I wouldn't worry about it. I would worry more about the sleep deprivation that is coming! :)
Congrats!
Diagnosed in 1999.
No surgeries.

Age : 31

Currently on 75mg 6mp. Just probiotics.
