my hair has fallen out all around the edges and across the back. I kind of look like a female Mr. T. Could this be related to the crohns or the humira shots. I am really sick right now, about to get a resection. It seems like if anything is different I attribute it to the crohns, just wondering if this falls in the catergory or not.

During my first major flare-up I lost about 25 pounds in a very short amount of time and my hair started falling out. Everytime I ran my hands through it, they would come out covered in hair. All I could ever figure was that it was from being extremely malnourished. It sounds like yours is much more severe though.

I was able to keep my hair loss from being so obvious by cutting it short and dying it dark. But it stopped falling out a few weeks after the flare started dying down.

So, in my opinion, I think it could definately be related.

I'm sure that once you recover from the resection and start feeling better, it will grow back quickly and beautifully =)
Diagnosed with Crohn's in March 2006.  Currently in a sort of unstable remission and still freaked out by random new symptoms.

I lose hair after I've been on steroids for a few months. How long have you been off the prednisone? Could it be from that? I wasn't on Humira long enough to know but the Remicade never caused hair loss for me.

--rejected (reaction/didn't work): Asacol, AZA, 6-MP, MTX, Remicade, Humira, prednisone
--stuck on methylprednisolone, tried Prochymal in Phase III study (can't wait til it's approved!)

It could be the physical and emotional stress that you're going through right now.  It could also be that your body isn't absorbing B vitamins properly- I understand that's not unusual for us.  I was losing hair by the hands full last fall, and after about 2 weeks on a folic acid suppliment it stopped falling out.  It's amazing how distressing losing some hair can be, when you consider all the other crap we go through.  It's like the final straw!

My hair fell out after the first time I got really sick - the drs don't know, my GI tells me to go to my dermatologist, they tell me to ask my primary care dr, etc etc - here are some things they said it could have been for me:

*extreme weight loss (about 35 lbs, down to around 98 lbs)

*trauma of getting very sick very fast

*6mp

*prednisone

*tellogen effluvium***

*** this was the diagnosis my derma gave me, similar to what pregnant women go through, it starts about 3 months afrer a traumatic event, hair loss mostly around the perimeter of the scalp, lasts for up to 6 months of falling out, peaking in the middle then tapering off.

Once my hair started to grow back I got sick again, went through the same cycle, but it is not as bad this time (then again there is less to fall out, you MUST have a sense of humor about this :)

One thing I unfortunately realized is that doctors treat the problem they specialize in - so while my GI dr might try to understand that it is difficult for a 32 yr old single girl (who has enough problems, lol) to have her hair fall out on top of everything, the main priority for them is getting the Crohn's under control so while they may try to empathize, it has been my experience that I end up leaving the office with as many answes as when I came in.

Good luck and let us know if you get any more info!  BTW I forgot to mention that as stressful as it is, your hair WILL grow back, pretty as ever. :)

Thanks for the responses. I have gone up from a size 5-6 to a 12-14 rather quickly from my meds. ( when diagnosed years ago I was under weight, oh how I miss those days) So although I am being vain, losing my hair on top of everything else is very depressing. I just miss the old me, when I look in the mirror it so strange to see this new person looking back.

Once again having found this place to talk to others who understand is wonderful. I am finally not alone!!!

Oh sweetie, don't think of yourself as being vain. You are just normal. No one likes to see these horrible changes in our bodies. It's hard enough feeling terrible on the inside and then seeing changes on the outside is just too hard. You are not alone here! I was very sick when I was 21 and my hair started to fall out on top of everything else. I was so worried, but it finally stopped and grew back just fine. I was very sick again last year when I turned 40 and again my hair started to fall out. I wasn't so worried this time because I knew it would come back. It did, but it came in grey! Ugh! At least that's something I can do something about! So, don't worry. We're here for you!
Hugs,
Clara

Dx in 1984 with Crohn's Disease.  In 1988 my terminal Ileum was removed due to inflamation that caused it to rupture.  I had surgery in February 2007 to remove more of my intestines due to scar tissue.  I then developed a very bad abdominal infection and was on IV antibiotics until June 2007.  I had chronic URQ pain which has gotten better.  I'm now in the process of getting off of the pain patch.

Thanks guys. I am now trying to figure out what to do with my hair next week when I go in for surgery. I REFUSE to be in the bed looking like side show Bob. I am african- american so my hair is very thick and will stay standing straight up if I don't comb frequently. Usually I can just throw on a wig but thats not an option right now. I wish I had the money to get braids so I could have one less thing to stress about but I am sure I will figure out something.

I had a bowel resection in Oct 2006. Within a short period of time I began to go bald. I had a girlfriend suggest a liquid vitamin/mineral supplement called Intramax. I found it on the internet. Within 10 days I began to grow hair again and now I am healthier than I have been in years. I think Intramax changed my life. Mal absorption was horrible beforehand. It's 100% carbon bond organic. So it can't hurt.
diagnosed in 1992
surgeries: 2 sm. bowel resections
diet: no dairy, no wheat
supplements: intramax (saved my life!)

Cheer -

Could you get them done cheaper at a beauty school? Do you have any friends that could do them? What about a cute bandana or scarf? I totally agree about not wanting to look crappy. If you already feel crappy looking crappy makes you feel worse. Even when I'm sick I do my hair and make up just to perk me up. Everyone at work knows I'm REAL bad if I come in without make up on. I hope you figure something out.
26 Year old married female law student.  Diagnosed w/ CD 3 years ago, IBS for over 10 years before that, which was probably the CD.  I am sort of lactose intollerant too but can handle anything cultured and do well w/ lactose pills and lactaid.  For crohns I am currently on Pentasa 4 pills/4x day and hysociamine prn.  I also have bad acid reflux and have been on PPI's since age 13.  I have been through prilosec, prevacid, and nexium.  Currently I am on Protonix in the morning and Zantac at night.  I alos take a birth control pill to allow some fun in my life.

a lot of my hair fell out when i was on pentasa, imuran, remicade, and after tapering prednisone. but i think the real culprit for me was the imuran. i am back on pentasa and have had no problems. it made me so mad when my doctor kept telling me "the number one cause of hair loss for women is stress/anziety". i just wanted to slap him, i knew it wasn't that. about a month after stopping imuran, the hair loss stopped for me. i got a cute short hair cut and now it's growing back in fuller. good luck to you, i know how rough it is, especially for us girls to deal with this!
diagnosed with Crohn's 2/2007. Small bowel resection 4/2007 d/t abcess, perforation.
