Anybody ever have side effects from Florastor?  Is it beneficial for Crohn's patients?

Funny you mention this. I was on florastor for a while and recently tried to take it again and a had a bunch of rumbling in my stomach and then the mucus began in my stools. I was on it for a few days. I decided to stop it and all my symptoms went away. I see there is lactic acid in there but I seem to have no problem with milk or milk products so I can't understand it???

Maybe someone has experience with this and will give us info.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I do know Florastor contains just ONE strain of probiotic. The one strain is Saccharomyces boulardii, a probiotic yeast. Coincidentally, this strain is one and only strain Elaine Gottschall (of the SCD) identified as NOT beneficial for Crohn's folks.

That said, any probiotic has the potential to give a person extra gas for several days until the body adjusts--this is considered normal. Probably not extra mucous, though!skull

There are many, many brands of probiotics on the market nowadays. Many have 3 or more strains of beneficial bacteria. I don't think I have ever run across S. boulardii in ANY of the popular brands at the health food stores....

I guess this is starting to get more attention from others, especially my GI. I get D every once in awhile. Not major but occasionally. Not sure if it is even a flare up of the Crohn's. But I called my GI yesterday and he recommended Flora Q probiotics. I guess I am kind of impressed because he recommended a natural form of treatment in addition to the Pentasa that I take a couple of times per day. The Flora Q has 4 strains of probiotics.

Here is a link that I just received earlier today about treating Crohn's with probiotics.

my doc had recommended the florastor so i've been on it for about a month. i hadn't thought about the gas issue but now that you mention it, i think i played JAWS in its entirety 3 or 4 times between the hrs of 5a and 7a last night. i wonder if it is related.
