My husband does not have crohns but has bowel troubles similar to IBS.  He works out a lot and last went to the gym Friday.  All week he had a dull aching pain on his left side, across from his belly button.  The pain is directly on the side, and is not radiating to the front or the back.  He currently describes the pain as a 3 or 4 at rest but when moving it jumps to around 6 or 7.  He wants to speak with his doctor on Monday but said that if the pain got worse he would go to the ER.  He seems to be doing ok to me but he is not very vocal about his pain.  He said he has not had D or thrown up but is a bit naseaus.  He pooped this morning and it was normal not narrow so he doubts it is any kind of obstruction.  I think he might have pulled a muscle at the gym.  Any other ideas?

Yeah... Could be a pulled muscle...

It also sounds like a side-stitch.... Which is when if you work out too much, sometimes you get this pain on your side... really, really hurts... but... It usually doesn't last for a long time... A day at most, I'd say... So... Doesn't sound like that'd be it unless he's continuously working out...

Hope he's all right...
I think I am being picked on by life, sometimes. But's that okay. Life and I are good buddies... I know life doesn't mean no harm. It just is the way it is. I can accept that.

Assuming that your husband is a hardcore former sheriff, I am going to assume he knows what a pulled ab muscle feels like.

does he have a fever? (referred apendesis pain?)
Does he have point tenderness? (ap/hernia?)
It is probably nothing. But if he develops any shock like symptoms, get him to an er.

Thanks guys! I didn't think it was a digestive emergency but I think I have scared him with stories of what *can* go wrong with our intestines. He had the pain (in a mild way) during the week but it got worse after Friday's gym trip and more severe today. He does not have a fever. I told him NO working out until he feels totally better. He agreed but then wandered out to the barn for some fire wood. *sigh* Guys can be so stubborn. But like I said earlier, he forgets about it at rest and then he will move the wrong way and it hurts a ton. He reached side ways to pet our dog and yelped. I definitly think it is a muscle pull. It does hurt when he touches/pushes on it but I think muscle pain would hurt that way too. I will get on his case to call his doc tomorrow.

We went to the ER once last year because his neck was hurting so bad he couldn't turn it. He had a torn muscle. He doesn't work out that hard compared to other guys I know but I guess is just injury prone. I don't think he does much stretching. I'll get on him about that.

You never know what it could actually be, he needs to see his doc to be on the safe side.

Sounds very similar to the pain I had when I was diagnosed with an inguinal hernia. Apparently, hernia pain can express itself in many different ways, even though inguinal hernias usuall occur in a small area. You might want to have the doc check him for a hernia just to cover all bases. I lived with mine for about six months before I finally had it fixed. They can be dangerous if it becomes strangulated, and the vast majority won't heal themselves; they must be repaired.

Has he had any blood in the urine? Stones ( my favorite subject! Arrrgghhh...) could cause this pain, though it should intensify. Which presents another question: Is he the stoic type? Or honest with you?
Anyway, a muscle pull or tear does sound possible.

Hey Matthew - when he told me his symptoms I thought of you immediatly. He is the stoic type as far as me not "seeing" his pain but he is not afraid to say "ok, hospital time" and we have done that a few times over the years due to his athletic injuries or abdominal pain. The pain is fairly localized so he is doesn't think it is his kidneys as it is not radiating into his back or down the front. I will let him know about the hernia suggestion and I am sure he will call his doc in the AM. He was just nervous that it could be something serious and I knew I could make him feel better by getting suggestions on here. In my opinion if he was grocery shopping, grabbing wood from the shed, and cooking dinner, he probably didn't need to go to the ER but we all know we push ourselves sometimes even when we are having an emergency.

(and yes ladies, I know I am blessed to have a husband who does the "wife" chores all the time!)
