Has anybody else noticed that their hair and nails grow super-quickly while on methotrexate? My hairdresser is sometimes surprised at how much my hair has grown between appointments, and my nails grow ridiculously quickly and need very frequent cutting.

Has anybody else experienced this, or is it just me?

Wow. I must say that your side-effects make more sense, Navy. My mother had the same problems when she was on chemo and mtx is, after all, a chemo drug.

Weird. Maybe I'm just unusual then!!

I started losing hair after about a month on MTX. I wish I would stumble upon a drug that helped it and my nails return to healthy growth!

I have been losing hair ever since I started methotrexate! I started methotrexate injections many years ago and now I take 8 tabs weekly. Whenever I wash my hair, gobs of hair come out, not just lots of strands either, clumps too at times! Now my hair is very thin. sad

Nails? I have always maintained a very good manicure. tongue

Do you guys take a Folic Acid supplement with your MTX? My Rheumy wanted to put me on it, but I couldn't tolerate the dumb Folic Acid. Miss Sissy Guts here:)

I did take Folic Acid while on the MTX, yes. But, I stopped after a month because it wasn't helping. My doc felt like I ought to have noticed a difference and there was no difference.

Nanners, what does the folic acid do to you?

The folic acid protects your heart from a deficiency that the MTX can cause.

I took MTX for connective tissue disease. I experienced significant hair loss. It wasn't too effective until the doctor upped my dose a bit. Sorry, can't remember how much I was taking.

Blessings!

My rhuemy said that the folic acid (she prescribed 1mg/day) would help protect against side effects including hair loss and fatique. I only started the mtx three weeks ago and I haven't noticed hair loss but my new hair is coming in lighter than the rest.

Sniper I can't tolerate the Folic Acid. It tears up my stomach. Even my GI was surprised because he said for most folks its a very easy supplement to take. Not me, took it for 3 days and it made me really sick. Quit taking it and I was fine.

Ivy . . . I wonder if your gut is healing from the MTX and you are absorbing more nutrition from your food?

Blessings!

Rosie, that makes sense. I lost 1/3 of my hair and had many nail troubles when I was at my sickest.

I wonder, though, if the folic acid may be responsible. I'm on 5mg a day, and the others who posted here said they were on 1mg.

Hmmm.
