Forgive me if this topic has been recently mentioned.  I have a stricture in the sigmoid colon, that is giving me a rough time.  I'll go a couple of days with no BM, then the next day it's pencil-thin stools and I feel like I am going to pass out on the toilet.  I just got back from the GI doc today.  He and I are trying to avoid the inevitable bowel resection.  He is increasing my Imuran to 100mg, adding hydrocortisone enemas daily, and Miralax once a day.  He said I should try soft, non-constipating foods.  After I left, I never discussed with him what exactly I should eat.  I'm not hungry and very bloated.  Could someone give me some diet recommendations for soft, non-constipating foods?  I am really trying to avoid surgery at this time in my life. I'll eat cat food if I have to, lol! Thank you so much, Julie

Hi Julie: I would try cooked fruit -- apple sauce, stewed prunes, etc. Well cooked veggies like squash, carrots, potatoes. Steamed fish, broiled chicken. You might want to limit cheese and other dairy, except yoghurt. Obviously eliminate seeds, strings, pits, nuts.

Is the key to have low residue or soft stools? I mean is it ok to have a bulky stool (like from eating bran or oatmeal) as long as it remains soft?

My stricture is in the TI and I find oatmeal is helpful in managing the worst of my diarrhea, but sometimes causes pain. My sigmoid has been resected.

My stricture is in the TI as well and I find oatmeal to be helpful. I find I have to drink and drink and drink a lot of water. I go from having pencil like stools to little pea-like ones to peanut like clusters , to very large stool that have a terrible time getting out...I feel like I'm giving birth again, except its not to a 7 lb baby girl, but a grossly deformed and alian looking thing that i'm sure is going to block the toilet.
The positive side of all this.....every day is a SURPRISE!

Thank you both for the reply and suggestions.  My GI didn't use the words low residue.  Just soft foods that are easier to pass.  Blessings, Julie
