Okay, I have thoughrt about this. Send the form back in that states you have Crohn's and the type symptoms that causes. That should be enough.

Would an adjoining Dr.'s letter be appropriate? I hate this because I really would like to perform my civic duty. Generally though I don't think I can make it through without an episode and that's not going to work. I can tell you, I would take out a balif to get to the bathroom and I've already had an episode this week whereby I had an accident in my sleep!

I reported online, and told a little about myself and how jury duty would put a strain on my already tenuous existence; no lies whatsoever. 15 minutes later I got an email saying I was excused. I'd like to perform my civil duty as well but I'd rather stay well rested so I can support myself. Good luck!

I am due for jury duty in July. I am waiting to see how I am doing before I agree to it. If I am not feeling just right, I will just tell them I have Crohns and can't sit in a courtroom for that long.

If you want to be on a jury, the court will likely accommodate you. If you don't, you will be excused. You're in a win win situation. I have assisted in jury selection (voir dire) many times and just want to warn you that when you are asked if there is any reason you would not be able to serve on the jury, you answer in a full court room. I always thought that if I were in that situation, I would ask to speak with just the judge and the attorneys so I wouldn't have to talk about my medical condition in front of everyone. With HIPAA, I don't think that the request to speak privately could be denied. Good luck!

I didn't even need a doc's note. I just told the judge I have CD and that I have a lot of D and will be going to the bathroom FREQUENTLY. She was disgusted and said, "Fine! Dismissed!" That was that.

I have never had a problem getting out of JURY DUTY since Crohn's. I have been assigned it twice and they have been totally fine with it!
No Problem!
Just write a letter. And to make it better have your doctor write one up to send with it!
Don't let this stress ya out!

I recently was called for JD. I did not send a note ahead of time, thinking i would just tell them and be excused...that was NOT the case...they made me wait in the room w/ everyone till my name was selected, then i had to go to a court room, where the judge asked if anyone had any reason why htey could not serve, more than HALF the people raised their hands, everyone explained why, including me, then she just went on w/ the lawyers asking us ??? I had to run out of the court room, when i got back, judge had called a 10min break, and im like, if u select me, ur gunna be calling a 10 min. break every 1/2 hr!!!! It took 5 hours to be dismissed!!! Next time i will bring a note!

Whatever you do, don't NOT respond to the summons! Either get excused beforehand, or go through the selection process and get excused, as others have described above. I've been called for jury duty several times, and each time several people didn't show up for the selection process. Each time the judge sent Sherriffs to find them and haul them into court - and then they got fined!!

I'm on call for jury duty the entire month of May.

When I got the letter in the mail, I wrote a letter back explaining that I have Crohn's disease, as well as chronic sinusitis, and to add injury to insult, last year I ruptured two discs in my lower back and it's painful to sit for any length of time.  I included info about the various doctors treating me and how to contact them.

I got a quick response back from the court: Your Request to be Excused from Jury Duty Has Been Denied!

mad

So I would advise anyone to include a doctor's letter if they want to get out of jury duty.

Beave - make sure you read my post that I linked to from the UC board. Even if you have to show up you will 99% get excused from being on the actual jury. I know it is a pain to have to show up but once there don't be embarassed to get up and use the bathroom as many times as you need to during the selection process. It will show what trial with you will be like. Also, dont keep waiting for the "right" opportunity to explain your problem. The first chance you get, do it. Like someone else said, it might be in open court, but heck, you are never going to see these people again. To get excuse it has to be something that would prohibit you from serving not something that would make it annoying for you. So your sinusitis might not cut it but the reality of having to stop a trial frequently for bathroom breaks would. Also, remember that they may try to accommodate you instead of excuse you because they are required to let anyone who wants to be on a jury have the opportunity to regardless of disability. So when they ask you what accomodations you need, tell them, but tell them that the anticipatory anxiety of having to request the break and frequently disrupt an entire court room of people will have a negative effect on your disease and make you even sicker. Tell them you would rather be excused than accomodated. And finally, like I said in my UC post, even if the court won't excuse you, the lawyers will likely use their pre-emptory challenge on you. They would hate to have their trial interupted. If worst case scenario you made it on and got sick, you could still be excused. There are back up jurors for worst case scenarios.

I have been called about 6 times, each time, my doctor has written me a note. I get a note back that I am excused. Once it was for Grand Jury, I don't know how I would have done that. The drive into the city each day would have killed me, let alone sitting in a jury box.

After nearly eight years with UC, six of them in flare, I no longer hesitate to use the magic words in public:

                 "bloody diarrhea"

Whatever someone is trying to get you to do, eat, or try is immediately forgotten. Judges hate being told there's no way I can wait for them to call a recess, when I have to go, I just have to go now - and I still may not make it.

Now that I'm in remission, I just insert "may", because there's nothing to guarantee I won't be back in a flare at any particular time.

Pass gas in the court room and say, ,," Excuse Me."
If we would read the secret history of our enemies,we would find in each mans life sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility.

Thanks Fitzy.  Right now I'm only on-call, meaning I have to call in every Sunday night to see whether I have to report on Monday morning.  This week I didn't have to report, so I have to call in again this coming Sunday.  When and if I do report, I'll be sure to speak up.

This wont help you but since I was not excused I just told them I was a behavior analyst-no defense attorney in his right mind would allow me to sit on a jury. I got selected twice and dismissed before my but hit the chair both times.

SJ - are you actually a behavior analyst or did you just say that lol? What does a behavior analyst entail? Sounds cool. My hubby is always looking for a new career and he was a psych undergrad. Might have to pass that one along.
