Next step after Prednisone?

For the past two years all I've been taking is Asacol. I'm assuming now that I'm needing Prednisone, I'm probably not going to be able to go back to just taking Asacol to keep this at bay. Or maybe I will? What do they usually go to next?

Also for those of you who have travelled. Is your doctor okay with making sure you have something like Prednisone on you in case you start to flare up? I have no idea if I'll still be on it in a month when we go. I'm afraid to go out of state without "something," in case I start to flare again.

I just took my second dose today. I'm hope I'm keeping it in long enough to work. The D is still pretty bad. Uh, this is so hard.

My GI put me on Imuran a few weeks after diagnosis.  That was on top of the Pentasa and Pred that I started while in the hospital.

Do you have an appointment scheduled before your trip?  Having a plan of action will help with the stress, and hopefully make you feel better.  Or at least, not make you feel any worse.

I hope things turn around for you soon.

If you are starting on a 40mg dose I think it's likely you will still be on some dose of the pred for your trip in a month.

Yes, I see him next week. So I plan on having a list of questions for him. LOL Including what he thinks I should take next. I'm having a hard time believing he'll be fine with just taking Asacol only again.

sr5599, I think your most likely right about that one. He just gave me a month's worth to start out with, and when I asked his nurse on the phone she said right now this is what he wants me on. And we'll see about when you'll need to taper later on. So I didn't know how long a person is usually on it. I'm assuming I will be. As much as I really DON'T want to be on it then, it really may be for the best.

My doctor lets me keep a "rescue" bottle of pred. Her only "rule" is I call her when I start taking it to make an appointment-it can take weeks to get in.

sjkly- That would work for me. I know I'd feel a lot more secure if I had a bottle of rescue something or other! :)

Jennifer, I was talking with my GI yesterday. I take Asacol now and feel pretty good but there is some active inflammation that shows up on my tests. My GI proposed 6 weeks of Prednisone (30mg for a week, then 25mg, then 20, etc.), meanwhile continuing to take the Asacol during and after the course of Prednisone. She thinks the Prednisone would get the inflammation under control and Asacol would keep it under control.

Who knows if that would actually happen, but that is her proposal. I haven't decided yet whether or not to take the Prednisone. I've resisted it all this time.

Good luck to you.

Hi butterfat! I've been exactly like you over the past 2 years. Just sticking with the Asacol and not wanting to go beyond it. Then I started having this odd swelling in my hands and foot. Then my lip swelled up big. It's just been awful, at that point I felt like I had no choice. It's hard to accept that the Asacol isn't enough.
