I had mentioned this on another thread, but it was a ways down there.

I read that on steroids (obviously) our immune systems are suppressed, and we can catch things more easily. Then not to mention it's harder to get over it. Has that been anyones experiences here?

I'm worried since I seem to already catch things easier then I'd like! Sorry for all the questions, this is just all so new to me!

I know this is technically the case, but I have never felt I catch more colds while on steroids than I typically would. Sometimes my daughter will even catch a cold and I get away without it. (very rarely, but still!) I am also fastidious about using sanitary wipes on the shopping carts since I've started all these immune suppressing drugs! I really think that helps!

--rejected (reaction/didn't work): Asacol, AZA, 6-MP, MTX, Remicade, Humira, prednisone
--stuck on methylprednisolone, tried Prochymal in Phase III study (can't wait til it's approved!)

Well I'll admit I was already using hand sanitizer when I'm out and about. I was catching the stomach flu 2-3 times a year, and was trying to do something to prevent that. I actually do think it helps, so now that I'm on steroids I'll keep it up!

Good to hear that you don't seem to catch every little thing, that was a scary thought! :-)

Surprisingly enough, I have not caught a single illness last year or this year... and I'm on prednisone.... Of course, I've been very careful because I know the medicine says it could make me more susceptible to infection and whatnot...

But I think the main reason I haven't gotten sick is because I'm not cooped up in my old house... *Is living at college... and... I guess the environment has been good for keeping me from getting sick... which is good... considering I feel sick enough as it is....*
I think I am being picked on by life, sometimes. But's that okay. Life and I are good buddies... I know life doesn't mean no harm. It just is the way it is. I can accept that.

I've never noticed an increase of illnesses, or problem healing. That only happened on Humira.

Technically that is true and I would avoid anyone with a serious infection but, most springs I get two sinus infections because of untreated allergies (I can't take antihystimes of any kind). This spring on pred I have had no sinus infections.

Hi!  I have Crohn's and autoimmune hepatitis, and I have been on prednisone 40 mg daily and cellcept as well for about one year now.  I also have not had problems with more colds/infections.  I wash my hands more often, and try to practice good hygiene in general.  I was suprised, too, that I didn't get sick more often. And, I teach martial arts to children which involves alot of touching "dirty little kids".  So be careful, but you don't have to feel so fragile.

Hang in there!
