I was thinking strongly about it before I knew I even had Crohn's. I asked about it and I was told no since I had already had a resection. It's so frustrating to have this dang disease and be overweight. Doesn't seem fair sometimes.

You're not alone. I'm also a "fat crohnie" Loosing weight is difficult because many of the foods that you'd eat to loose weight, aren't Crohn's friendly.

I'm also over weight and can't seem to loose. I've never asked about the lapband but when I did weight watchers last
year I actually felt my best. I took a break over the holidays and just haven't gotten back to it. But once I get
to feeling better here I plan on counting points again. I was able to loose 25 lbs last summer.

I view it as we've got a bit of an edge (extra storage). As for weight loss surgery I've heard so many negative things like after surgery it's a very bad battle with malnutrition, and the survival rate isn't very good on the long term. Since we already have the battle of malnutrition, in my opinion I'm not going to add to it.

I don't view fatness as a negative. Not all the hype is correct. I think the media's blown some things out of poportion especially when you start reading and educating yourself. I think the main thing is trying to be as healthy as you can at any size, and learn to love yourself.

My theory for me anyways is my body gains weight because i have crohn's and have troubles getting all the nutritients absorbed so it thinks it's starving. The weight will take care of itself when the disease is under control, and if my weight doesn't change then it's just the way my body was made.

Hi Dixie,

I dropped 40 pounds after two abscess surgeries. l think about all the effort I spent before trying to loose the weight only to be happy that I had it when I need it!! I am still loosing because I'm on 6mp now and it just kills my appetite.

Lap band is waiverable IBD, but in general it is not allowed.

Thanks All, I have been thinking on the same lines as everyone else. I need to loose weight - want too - but Can't! so I'll just stick to being my fat and fluffy self...... but on another concern I have lumbar back problems don't know how much is from weight (I carry most of my weight in the thigh area!!!)
But I don't know about trying another diet every time I have I would loose only to gain back ++++ each time. I stayed on a low carb diet for about 3 1/2 years or so but never dropped any weight - felt better, but even gained on it while taking prednisone...... eeeeck!

I actually just saw a commercial this a.m. about the lap band and one of the warnings said it is not approved for those with autoimmune disorders. So I think for us its not allowed.
Been living with Crohn's Disease for 32 years.  Currently on Asacol, Prilosec 60 mg, Estrace, Prinivil, Diltiazem, Percoset prn for pain and Calcium.  Resections in 2002 and 2005.  Recently diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and doing tests to see if I have Inflammatory Arthritis or AS.

Dixie, I am also overweight and wish I could find a solution. My body seems to just hang on to fat cool   Also, since I was diagnosed I even gained more. I swear it happened when starting entocort but who knows. I am trying to eat as healthy as possible. I do think the Lap band would not be a good idea. You never know what it could do to your CD.

This is my first post on the website.  I have been reading posts for awhile, and decided now was a good time to join.

I was just diagnosed with Crohns 2 months ago.  I took Entocort, and now I am trying to be on 6mp (75mg).  However, i have been throwing up every time i take it.  They are going to put me on a lower dose and a generic brand.

But - about the weight thing.  My favorite thing to eat before I was diagnosed with Crohns was salad!  And, it was the primary way for me to loose weight.  Well, of course I can't eat that anymore.  Nor can i eat any raw vegetables or really healthy things for me.  So, how exactly am i suppose to keep from gaining weight??  I have been so upset about this.  Because I have been gaining weight from not being able to eat the vegetables that I want!  UGH!
And I am going on vacation with my husband in 3 weeks and I want to look good :).  I mean, what is the other option, just eating really small portions and try to eat healthy things.  No junk - that is so hard.  Especially when my husbands favorite things to eat are junkie foods.

So, i feel ya.  I don't know what to do.  But, i am so upset about it.  And a little depressed because I want to be thinner, but can't do it.

Welcome Pianogrl!

After having several abscess surgeries and being really sick for months, I was thankful I had extra weight. If I hadn't had it, I would have been put on IV feeding. So I have come to appreciste my "buffer" against disaster. I suggest you think of it that way!! This disease will make you re-think what is important and what is culture trash. Try not to gain -- but remember it is very likely the meds -- and be thankful for having some reserves!
