For those of you that work out of your home...What business specialty did you choose, what was your prior employment specialty and/or hobby? Do you feel it has been able to sustain you financially over the months, years?  I am seriously considering a home based business.  Do you ever regret taking this route over working in the "general public"?

I've never really found anything to be legit. Besides maybe selling Avon, and that really isn't for me. I think if you had a career in something before that had options to work at home, then that would work well. I was a medical secretary before I got too sick to work. I wish I could do medical transcription at home, but I understand it isn't an easy field to get started in.

I taught private music lessons out of my home for the last 10 years. Just the last couple of years, I have stopped doing that I went back to work teaching part time. It is 2 days a week. I teach band at 3 different schools, and then 1 day a week I teach private lessons at the school that my girls attend. As far as I'm concerned, it is the perfect setup for me, but I know that it wouldn't work for everybody.

My wife has RA and enjoys working from home when she can. She worked for years doing medical insurance billing in an office, and is now making the transition to working from home.

She went to a local community college for most of the training, but the best training was on the job. She has avoided the online training, as it is a pretty weird subject, and I think she feels she learned it best on the job.

Might be worth a shot. It's steady work. She does 40 hours a week, and when at home she can work whatever hours she wants.

I don't know how your energy levels and joints are Broom but where I live doggie daycare is BIG business. The local places charge $20/day per dog. The dogs just hang out together and have food/toys/beds/couches. They charge extra for baths, walks, grooming, etc. All you need is a house and a lawn. Start up cost would probably be the price of the fence, some advertising, and licensing. I also just saw a business on craigslist that really looked legit. I can usually sniff out losers lol. I'll let you know if I find the link.

Any chance you have web design skills? Or could you take a few classes at a community college? A friend of mine designed websites throughout college in her spare time and charged $1000/site. I think she did it all from home but I can't say for certain.

Sorry for the multiple posts.  This is the link I was looking for.  http://www.greatpayingjob.info/  The website name sounded suspicous but the site looks legit, and is accredited by the chamber of commerce (supposedly).  It looks like it involves selling people discount medical care cards or something.

Fitzy- I have thought about the doggie daycare, however, I'm already running a zoo by way of all my hairy grand-critters!  Don't know if I'd have the patience for that anymore especially on days...well you know.  The whole web design thing did catch my eye as I was reviewing info on designing a web page for a home base business.  I would like to find a creative outlet with this whole home based business idea.  I've done various bookkeeping, auditor, medical administrative and middle management positions over the last 19 years so I'm also looking for something NOT down those career paths if possible.  Girl's gotta eat though.

Gail-  I'm doing okay.  The drug changes for the Osteoarthritis are helping.  Nanners...are you listening...the Ultracet (Tramadol) works better than Percocet!  Not much they can do about the Fibro that I'm not already doing.  I did try to post a lengthly summary on my Rhemy visit thread this weekend, however, when I finished typing it HW had booted me out of my log in!  Got frustrated and haven't re-posted anything yet.  So far, I'm well out of the "filing for disability" catagory by Social Security standards and I'm not ready to give up the fight yet anyway.

Thanks to all for your replies...if there are any more...keep 'em comin'!
