One more problem to deal with :-)

I was given my blood test results and I have macrocytosis (large red blood cells). The nurse said it could be from a B12 deficiency and the Dr suspects it so he is sending me for more blood tests... I feel like a pincushion lately!

From what I read on the net a few things can cause it, folic acid deficiency, B12 deficiency, alcoholism (not me by the way :), medicines, blood loss and I forget the rest.

Anyone have info on this? Any ideas what might happen. Will I get a lot of blood taken?

I asked the nurse and she knew almost nothing so I figured I would ask my HW experts which probably know more than her!

thanks!
Karen

I have had problems with macrocytosis since I started Imuran in 2004. Every single CBC shows macrocytosis. I have hemolytic anemia and macrocytosis is one of the features of it. Most likely they will only take a tube or two of blood do do the B12 and folate test.

They probably will do the tests Ides mentioned and maybe 2 more tubes for CBC and CMP. Macrocytosis can result from any of the things you mentioned or from a hemorage or blood die off which you would then need to find a cause for. Basically what happens is you become anemic (have low red cell counts) so your body produces a substance whos name starts with a p (someone will supply the name) that tells your bone marrow to create more red cells. Well, instead of staying in the marrow until they mature they are dumped into the blood stream early because they are needed. These immature (larger) red cells are not as efficient at carrying oxygen.
If you fix the cause of the anemia the macrocytosis goes away.
B-12 deficiency would probably be corrected by injections at first then maybe you could manage it with sublingual supplements. Folic Acid you can do sublingual. Iron depends on wether you have malabsorption-pills or infusions.
Hopefully the tests will give you more definitive answers.

thanks Ideas and Sj, that was a big help. I had a feeling b12 injections might be in my future :-) oh well at least my Doctor is trying to do something about it.

I too have macrocytosis. However,I do not have any of the suusal reasons for it. My red cell size has continued to get larger over the past 10 years. I have no other symptoms and no anemia, folic deficiency, alcoholism drugs I take, etc. I'm getting nervous. Any one else ever heard of this?

Are polysythemia (sp?) blood cells enlarged like this? And isn't that a disorder of the spleen? Don't the large blood cells "thicken" the blood?

I always watch and count the number of tubes they set out for my blood draws. IF there are more than 3-4 I always ask that they use a "butterfly" for the draw. I've had as many as 8 tubes drawn from one "stick". I don't find the "stick" or the actual draw uncomfortable BUT quite often when changing tubes on the syrnge it can be fairly uncomfortable from the needle bumping the vein around and that doesn't happen w/the "butterfly".

It is often surprising to me how many different blood tests can be done off just TWO tubes.

Mine was from the Imuran. When I was taken off of it, it decreased.

I vaguely remember some red blood cell size (large) research in relation to fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome years ago at a university in .... New Zeeland, I think. Maybe Australia.
