Hi all,

There have been a lot of posts on the forum lately by people anxious to find information on medicines they've just been prescribed, and I thought it might help to have a list of URLs that can give people basic information about the medications they're taking.

Please, please check these URLs before asking your questions on the forums. This will save forum space as well as our members' energy, and will help you to get the best support possible from the forums. Please remember not to rely on this forum alone, and to consult with your doctor if you have any questions, concerns or problems with your medications.

* Basic information about STEROIDS:
(Predsolone, Prednisolone etc),
5-ASA medications (Mesasal, Pentasa, Dipentum, Sulfasalazine etc),
AZATHIOPRINE and 6-MP, FLAGYL, CIPROfloxacin and CYCLOSPORINE
can be found here:
http://www.healingwell.com/library/ibd/faq2.asp

* Basic information about anti-TNF medications
(REMICADE aka Infliximab; HUMIRA aka Adalimumab) can be found here:
http://www.healingwell.com/library/ibd/faq3.asp

These are some threads where members have been advised on how to start taking new medications, and how to cope with their side-effects:

These are just some quick posts I've found through searching and they may not be the best source possible for each med. If anyone has a better thread for each med, please submit it below or let me know by email. It would be good if we could get a definitive guide together for our members.

Best wishes,

Ivy.

thanks for that Ivy!

I tried to search for the posts on probotics because I want to start one and had a hard time finding them even though I know there are lots. So your post can help people find their med info quickly!

Great idea Ivy and thank you for taking the time to put this list together. Yes, you are so right about the space its taking up for peeps with questions about drugs. There are many sites available to look up any medication. Google is a great source too. Susie

Thanks for the compliments!!

I didn't mean that people shouldn't ask med-related questions on the Crohn's forum; just that if five people ask for basic information on a certain med (as has been happening here lately) people are going to get fed up and not respond with much information, and then the person who asked the question is going to get frustrated or feel ignored. It would be sad if that happened, so I hope that these threads can point people to threads where each med has been discussed at length.

Karen, I added a probiotics thread for you :-)

... and added threads on SCD and the Maker's diet.

I'll add low residue diet when I can find a decent thread. If anyone has one, could they please let me know?

I haven't activated the links because I can't do it on my computer... same as I can't get into chat. C2 is aware of the problem and usually does it for me, but if someone else is able to, that would be great.

Thanks for the compliment, Ides.

And I've just added 6MP. Thanks to whoever activated the links. You've just taught me how to do it! Thanks so much.

Hmmm. Are there any HTTP gurus who know why the last few links aren't working?

Ivy -- Thank you very much for making our lives a little eaiser when it comes to doing our "leg work" on our care.  This forum is a terrific place.  I can't believe all of the information people share.  The warnings about how people reacted to certain meds and suggestions on what works for someone reminds you that you need to be diligent when it comes to your health!

It would not hurt to print this and post it by your computer. I did. faster than looking it up every time.

Ivy's list would work great as an FAQ that everyone sees at the top... Or possibly as a post within Chron's Disease Resources.

What does everyone else think?

I thought that too, but (and I include myself in this) I don't know if people actually LOOK at the stickies. I think their eyes glaze over them, and just focus on the posts themselves. I'd be interested to know what you all think!

PS. Karen, I search through Google. I type "healingwell crohn's" and then whatever I'm interested in, eg "healingwell crohn's tysabri", and then I go to the *last* page of Google's results and click on "do this search again, with omitted pages included". For some reason, that seems to work better than a straight search.

I think whenever you go in to edit your original post, Ivy, that somehow the links are deactivating. I just went in and fixed them all again.

Ivy, thanks for the tips! I will try that search right now! I do think a sticky might work if we worded it correctly... I also think we could encourage people asking about meds to check the sticky at the top of the page for more info.

Might I suggest that in addition to the discussion links we also add links relatively trustworthy sites that describe these medications?
