Does anyone here have experience with Small Bowel Bacterial Overgrowth? I have a structure in my small bowel and I have experienced lots of gases lately.  I am wondering if the gases are related to Small Bowel Bacterial Overgrowth.  I do not have diarrhea per se and my foods are not gaseous neither.  .

Yep, I have it now as we speak. I only have maybe 4 bm in the AM, depends on what I eat.  I take cipro and flagyl (metronidizol) once a day.  Usually keeps it at bay.  I use acidolphilis if it gets bad, or yogurt, Activia is the best, or bio best.  I bloat for no reason, and gasey, bubbling  and lower right bowel pain. I have tried everything.  Also on prednisone, just started today cause Humira isnt working. If the pain gets bad I take a pain killer, half dose.  Do you have painful gas? confused

I do not have painful gas exactly.  But I often feel the bubbles and air movements in my belly. Once I let it go, I feel much relieved.  If I hold it for a while (such as in a public place), I would feel bloated and very uncomfortable.  Most of time, I do not have trouble passing the gas.  It is just very annoying.

I have had very painful gas for a couple months, but it's been better lately. I've eaten gluten free this week, and I think it's really helped.

How can you tell if it's from bacterial overgrowth or from inflammation?
Dx'ed in 1999. No surgeries.

Current meds: 75 mg 6MP. 20mg prednisone.  Udo's Choice Probiotics (30 billion).

Crohn's 4 Ever...how do you know you have SBBO? What kind of test did they do for you to show that?

I've always been under the impression that I, too, had this because my GI once put me on a Xifaxan because, as he said: "Sometimes the small bowel can get an overgrowth of bacteria". That was last year. And when I researched SBBO, the symptoms were mine to a T.

Then just a couple of weeks ago, I mentioned to my GI something about the SBBO and he said, "well, we don't know that you actually HAVE that."

So he'd just put me on the antibiotic IN CASE I was suffering from SBBO...so now I'm wondering how you test to see if you ACTUALLY HAVE SBBO.
Diagnosed in October, 2004 at age 33.

Previous/occasional Rx's: 20mg Prednisone taper, Flagyl, Levaquin

Well I never been "tested" I just know, I have crohns for 30 years, 15 being diagnosed and the worst.  2 resections and headed for a third.  I know by trial and error.  My opinion is that bacteria manifests into gases, and I am convinced that it is the upset balance of bacteria that causes the crohns to flare.  I have patches in my small intestine, and no narrowing or strictures, but when the bacteria gets out of hand I get gassy and a heavy feeling and some time very painful gas and bloat.  That had subsided, for a while because i was on flagyl, cipro and Humira.  I backed off the cipro and only on flagyl to see if the Humira was kicking in and it wasnt.  So now back on cipro and flagyl, and now prednisone.  when your bacteria balance is out of whack I get yeast infections.  My test always came out normal. You have to listen to your body.  That is my experience.
