Hi all, am I ever glad to be back! I had my third bowel resection for a stricture - also found an abcess.  Bled from the anamosis and had to have 5 units transfused.  Spent 5 days in the ICU.  Now, my questions for all you post-surgical patients - how do I get rid of the 20 lbs. excess fluid from the surgery?  Is it from the high doses of steroids I was given - do I drink lots of water, walk, lie down . . . .

Hi yes it is probably from the steroids and you will lose it without really doing anything once you are off them. How many days post-op are you? I remember after my first resection, my husband brought me clothes to wear on the day of discharge -- we were a four-hour drive from the tertiary centre where the surgery was performed and I had been in hospital for six weeks so I gave him instructions on what to bring from home. I had been an ambulance transfer so I had nothing in hospital to wear. Big mistake. I couldn't get my feet into my shoes no matter what i tried. No socks, no nylons (middle of summer) so I left the hospital wearing hospital booties. To make matters more farcical -- I began bleeding from the rectum 40 minutes away from the hospital. After two emergency restroom pit stops, when all that was left was bright red blood, I put a call in back to the floor looking for the surgical resident. No advice of course, and no resident just an invitation to come back and go to emergency or go home and see my family doctor. We went home, limping from one washroom to the next, me in my surgical booties with that expression on my face that only another crohnnie would recognize. Ohmagod am I gonna make it?

We left the hospital around noon and didn't turn in our driveway until 7 p.m. that evening -- me still in my surgical booties.

But within five days of home, my weight just plummetted. So I expect you'll be wondering where your bum went in a couple of days.

Beleenstein - oh, that is a funny/tear-jerking story.  You must have been terrified from the bleeding.  I am 9 days post-op. I guess I was given 75mg pred twice a day, and 2 days ago went to 75 once, and 50 yesterday, so 40 today for a week.  I do hope I can wear some clothes in a week.  Hope you're doing well.
