PLEASE don't answer this if you don't live in Australia. Thanks.

Is it possible to buy lactose-free, dairy-based ice cream in Australia?

I know we can get So Good soy-based ice-cream, but I've just discovered that I can tolerate lactose-free dairy yoghurt. I hoped to find something lactose-free and dairy-based in the ice-cream section, but spent half an hour searching the freezers at Woolies / Safeway and couldn't find anything.

I don't mind the So Good; it's nice; I just wanted to see if I could tolerate something other than the yoghurt. And I felt like a treat :-). Is there a lactose-free, dairy-based brand available? If so, where? Coles? Aldi? IGA?

Thanks,

Ivy.

Hi Ivy! More than anything I just wanted to say hi ... ;)

Have you tried Mrs Flannery's? I'm not sure if they have it but they just might ... just an idea.

I can't stand the so Good stuff, I remember trying it ages ago, I like the milk but no the icecream, then again soy is always an acquired taste!

Rats. It's Queensland only.

Thanks for trying anyway, Phoebe. It's great to hear from you! How are you feeling now?

Liddells (an Ozzie Co.) now make lactose free thickened cream so you could try to make your own. Their milk is great and I can't wait  until the yoghurt is imported into NZ. Info is on their website

Hi Ivy,
Cant say that I have seen anything like this in our local supermarkets.
would you be willing to make your own?
I have hundreds of recipe books I could scroll through and hopefully find an appropriate recipe.
We also have a "Home Icecream" van drive through our suburb every fortnight - not sure if you have this or not, I think he sells some non dairy form.
I am putting pen to paper next week, before the school holidays.
Hope you are doing better!

We have Liddels lactose-free yoghurt here, and I think it's much nicer (though fattier) than the Vaalia stuff. Great to know that there's cream coming! Thanks so much! If I could get cream, I'd be able to make my own ice cream, wouldn't I? (Thanks, Jo, I have recipes here too, and there's always the 'net).

Jo, there's no mobile ice cream van here. I don't know if it's because I live in the country and you live in the city, or because home delivery is still more commonplace in NSW than elsewhere. My grandfather lives in NSW and he still has a milkman!!! I haven't seen one down here *ever*.

Thanks for the enquiry, Jo. My brain is starting to recover a little, but I still find that I can only concentrate for very short periods. I'm certain it's a medical thing - medications? fibro? something else?

When do school hols start there? They started here last Friday.

Good to hear from you! Thanks for the input (and welcome to wombles)

WOW a milkman - now that would be great, it seems the main grocery I run out of most (there are seven of us here, I guess thats why),
The Home Icecream van has only been coming every fortnight for the last few years (I used to tell my son that when he rings the bell it means he has run out of icecream - terrible I know - its more expensive than the supermarket brands and not any nicer).
School holidays are from this Friday for two weeks. I have started your letter but am trying not to be idle for too long so I should be sending by Friday.
Take care Jo

My grandparents used to get delivered ice cream and I know what you mean - nicht sehr gut.

Hey, I'll swap you our weather and then none of you will be needing any ice cream at all. I know we need the rain, but ENOUGH already! I can't get the laundry dry, and we're all getting sick of being wakened at 4am, terrified that the roof will blow off. It's been going on for 2 - 3 weeks now.

Will you be able to keep working while the kids are on hols, or are you taking time off?

Hi Ivy,
We have had your 'extreme' wind here for the past two days, walking to pick my son up from school was like doing resistance training the wind was that strong. Still no rain forcasted, maybe this Saturday they think, although our tanks are still half full so we cant complain. Maybe I should just wash my car again, that brought the last downpour we had.
I am working these holidays, as a casual its no work no pay, so will be doing a few shifts.
I sent your letter this morning, I knuckled down and finished it this morning, this I sent with a little extra 'something'
Take care

Ooh! Thank you so much. I look forward to receiving it. (And I'm impressed that you were able to write yours so quickly. Sorry again for the delay).

I know what you mean about the resistance training - good if you can walk *with* the wind, though!

You should see the ocean here! Huge waves right out the the horizon. Very spectacular, though a bit scary.

We're not really meant to do OT chatter on the forums (my fault; I started it), so how's your health, Jo?

Crohn's-wise, improving (slowly) but not completely right yet.

Everything else is a bit hard - I have so little energy. Am slowly crawling out of a brain fog that has lasted for months. I can now read so I *suppose* that's a small improvement, but I still can't cope with anything much harder than teen fiction.

The gp said that because I've been so sick for so long, it could be at least another year before I begin to feel halfway normal. I think that's good news, because I was worrying that this might be as good as I'll ever get!

Hi Ivy

I eat the vaalia loctose free yogurt less fat and more culture, a little zymil lactose free milk and gelato - Gelati Italia Sorbet, Gelativo Gelato Lemon Lime or the Weis sorbets. There are other flavours too. All from Woolys.

PS. Re your earlier comment, does that mean that your health is still very unstable, despite the surgery?

Jo, I think it's medications that are causing the problems. And maybe fibro too. Not sure.

Brig, thanks heaps for the ice cream recommendations. I know I need to be careful with Weis, because some have millk and some don't. What flavours do you choose?

I haven't seen the Gelati brand, but I have seen Gelativo. Thanks very much. I'll look out for them.

You're right about the Vaalia having less fat. They have probiotics too, which is good.

Thanks again.

I got the berry sorbet I think but it was very sweet. They are the only brands I can find in the freezer that dont have dairy, lactose and the sugar isnt tooooooo bad. I get them as my partner loves ice cream and when he is eating it sometimes I cannot resist so will have my sorbet haha
Also I am trying to eat better to lose some kilos and on the days I do ok, at night need something sweet.

Thanks, Brig.

Right now it's the dairy but no lactose I'm looking for - wanting to challenge my diet a bit.

I know what you mean about needing something sweet at night. Life with CD is draining - the sweetness gives a boost, doesn't it?

Hi Ivy!

I’m sorry, didn’t get my notifications emailed to me after I subscribed to this thread!
I’m doing pretty well, on and off I guess, I saw the specialist last week and he thinks my crohn’s might have ‘spread’ to my small intestine (I’ve been having obstruction symptoms, intense bloating and discomfort) … so there is a possibility I’ll have to do another colonoscopy and then a pill camera… problem is I start a new *dream* job in a couple of weeks and I won’t have leave to take to see the specialist … might just take an afternoon or something.

At the moment I’m cursing the Brisbane rain and trying to dry my washing – driving down to NSW to visit my parents tomorrow – long overdue, I haven’t seen them since Easter! Always seems to be raining when i visit though! And then they will come back and visit up in bris for a few days. Really looking forward to it, I’ve been enjoying this little break between jobs!

How have you been?

Hi Ivy,

When I lived in Peth, WA I used to eat vegan foods at times when my CD flared up.  I have just found a site that states they sell in Australia and even though they don't state on the boxes or containers that is lactose free.  I know that the company is in the US but they state that they sell products in Australia so maybe you can have a look for them in wolies / safeway or a natural food store there.

Here are the sites for them:

http://www.soydelicious.com/products/purely_decadent_Coconut_Milk.html  (they state that this one is lactose free, and gluten free)

Good luck and hope that you find them.

Ooh! That ice cream sounds so nice.

I can't remember seeing these products before, but I will keep my eyes open. Thanks, Shoshanna. (How are you feeling, btw?)

Phoebe, I'm really sorry to hear that your disease is spreading, especially as you have a dream job lined up. Don't let them pressure you into ignoring your illness, though - that can lead to obstructions, surgery etc etc etc, as I'm sure you know. I think it's in their best interest to leet you keep seeing your doctor and receiving treatment so that you can keep working and not have to take extended sick leave! (Sorry for the growl, but I feel a bit defensive on your behalf).

Congratulations on your job! It's wonderful news!

I.

PS. Are you still volunteering with the Crohn's assn?
