I have a very swollen tonsil that is causing me tremendous pain. I saw my internist today, and wondered if it could be a Crohn's ulcer on my tonsil. He said he doesn't think so, because he said that usually people would get multiple mouth ulcers, not just one. The rapid strep test was negative, but when he swabbed the tonsil, it was full of blood and pus. He gave me a prescription for amoxicillin, but antibiotics make my Crohn's much worse, so I don't want to take it unless the strep culture comes back positive. He also gave me liquid Carafate (an antacid) to swish in my mouth for pain, but it isn't helping at all. I realize this is just one stupid tonsil, but the pain is really intense! Has anyone had anything like this? Do you think it could be Crohn's related?

It could very well be crohns, because I had mouth sores or cankers, not always white, but the side of my tongue was so sore, on the one side, and I was just getting rid of it, and boom, back again. Always on one side. I put it down to being on Cipro for so long, and I switched back and forth from that to Flaygl. Now that I am not on any antiinflammatories, I it has gone away. I just used stuff to numb it because I couldnt even talk, and my bile acids were high too. Maybe you should get off Cipro if you are on it. I has been a couple of months now, and it is gone. I am on Humira now and pred. Good luck.

If your tonsil is full of pus you probably need the antibiotics strep is not the only nasty bacteria out there. Of course that is just my opinion (and your doctor's).

Thanks for the responses. I'm not on the Cipro...I just hadn't changed my info in awhile. Last year, I had a similar throat infection, but I had 103 fever. This time I don't think I have a fever...maybe low grade at night because I'm having night sweats. I'm trying to figure out if it is a Crohn's ulcer, does that mean it's not bacterial? I was sick for months last year after the antibiotics...I'm just trying to avoid the whole mess again. Thanks for your input

Maybe your tonsil's are just bad and need to come out??? Mine were horrible about 7 years ago and I had to get
them out. I would go on meds and as soon as I stopped taking them I would get a horrible sore throat again within
a few weeks. After a visit to a nose, throat, and ear doctor, he took one look at them and said they are coming out.
So maybe you should see a specialist?

That is what I am thinking too, that they need to come out. I had mine out when I was four years old. In my late 20's to early 30's I kept getting these horrible sore throats with fever and chills. I'd go in, get antibiotics, get a little better and then get sick again with in the month. This went on and on. I also developed this weird pus pocket thing on one side. I would literally press on it and blood and pus would come out. It was painful and disgusting.

Finally after a couple years of this nonsense I was told to see an ENT (ear, nose and throat doctor) for the problems. Well, he took one look in my throat and said that I needed to get my tonsil's out. I laughed and told him that I already had them out. Longer story short, I needed a second tonsillectomy. Yikes, it was painful to have done as an adult, but it may help your symptoms.

I seem to be getting this tonsil thing about once a year. I worry about any surgery with the Crohn's...it seems like any change does me in! I have a physical coming up at the end of the month, I guess I'll discuss it with my doc. thanks

They say tonsilitis is day surgery, however I realize all surgeries are risky but if this throat thing is really bothering you I would think about getting it out. I hate surgeries too, had too many besides crohns and yes it affect me at times too. Good luck let us know what the doc says.

I've gotten just one ulcer at a time on the roof of my mouth many times so your docs info is not accurate...double up on your probiotics and be sure to take them at least 2 hours AFTER you're done taking your antibiotics or they'll just eat up the probiotics.

I would get the tonsils out if the dr says e needs to be done. If they are infected they are putting bacteria in your system which can't be good with cd. Susie

If you take antibiotics be sure to take probiotics.  Antibiotics screw up my system.  I would go see an ENT.  Ear Nose and Throat Specialist.
