I've been tapering down on the prednisone in hopes the Methotrexate kicks in here soon.
Well I'm down to 20mg and I started not feeling well.  My joint pain has kicked up and
I'm going to the bathroom more.  sad     Next week I'm suppose to go down to 15mg and
I just don't think I will be able to if the Methortexate hasn't kicked in yet.  This week
will only be my 4th injection of it.   I wonder if I should call my GI Monday and let him
know that I'm not going to be able to tolerate going down to 15mg?????   I know
he is sick of hearing from me. I think we have talked every week since this flare
started the beginning of May.

Meds I have tried:  Too many to list- LOL
Meds currently on:  Prednisone 20mg tapering
Methotrexate injections once a week 25mg
Folic Acid 5mg once a week
                           Wellbutrin

I would call your doctor... It's only been a month on MTX and it seems like getting worse before it kicks in should not be necessary. Certainly worth asking about!

It's the double edge of steroids -- we hate them but they can keep up stable. Good luck!

--rejected (reaction/didn't work): Asacol, AZA, 6-MP, MTX, Remicade, Humira, prednisone
--methylpred - finally off 6/15/08, tried Prochymal in Phase III study (can't wait til it's approved!)
--started Tysabri 3/21/08, started Xifanan 5/24/08

LBJ-my doc did not suggest tapering until I had been on mtx for eight weeks. Once I started tapering I had no return of symptoms and got off the pred easily. I would not have been able to do that at week four. I think I would call the doc and delay another decreas-maybe even ask to go back up to the last level I felt good on.
Are you still feeling really bad after your injections?

Yeah I think I'm going to call him Monday and tell him I either have to stay at 20mg another week or so or go back up
to 25mg a little longer.  I just don't see going down to 15mg this week and feeling good.
This past weeks injection wasn't too bad.  I took it later Thursday night about 10pm in hopes I could get through more of Friday feeling good.  But it actually hit me early on Friday so I'm glad I was off for the 4th.  I slept a few hours in the afternoon and felt better after I woke up.  Today I was tired some and napped when my son napped. LOL  Feel a little nausea's off/on but not too bad.
It does seem to be getting a little better each one.  I was more functionable today then I have been the past Saturdays so thats good.  Thanks for asking about me!!!  :-)

I don't know if this will help any but I was put back on prednisone..uhm probably close to the same time as you. My G.I.'s way of weening off the prednisone is by 0.5mg per week.So it goes like this 40 mg for 7 days, which means 8 tabs. Then 7.5 tabs for the next seven days. Then 7.0 and so on.He feels that dropping 1 mg at a time is enough to cause the flareup to re-start.I also plan on calling back since I'm at 20 mg right now and I've started the big ''D'' again and the joint pain and the bleeding andthe etc etc I never thought I'd say this but i want to stay on prednisone.I've enjoyed the pain free days..but I've gained 36 lbs!!!!

Thanks everyone. I called my doctor yesterday and he called me back last night. We decided it was best to go back up to 30mg
and try again. The Methotrexate hasn't kicked in so we are hoping in the next few weeks here that it does. Hopefully when I
get to 20mg again the methotrexate will be doing its thing and then I can drop down the prednisone with no problems.
If not then I may have to do like you said meandmyhunny2, drop 1mg at a time... I remember being on this 8 years ago
and having problems coming down off it too. Bllahh... Yes I enjoy the pain free days too and I'm too afraid to get on the
scale!!! LOL

I am glad that your doctor increased your prednisone....though it is a drug that I love to hate. Methrotexate can take time to kick in and in some people it can take up to six months to work. I hope that you don't take that long. Good luck and hope that you find some releif quickly.
