Hello again everyone!
I've visited this site on and off for a few years  but was happily symptom free since a total colectomy in 2001!
I've  basically just woken up two days ago with severe acute arthritis on every joint in my body.  ER prescribed pain meds and referred to rheumatologist (sp).  Along with Prednisone ( which I suspected) I was prescribed methotrexate!  I'm trying to find out about side effects and am freaked out by all the "potentials".
I was planning on going to San Diego for work for 5 weeks this sunday.  My mom is concerned that being away from my doctors might not be a good idea since I don't know the side effects.
Any advice would be great!!
Thanks
Diagnosed w/Crohn's in 1998 (21 years old).  Remission initially, until 2001 when I became pregnant.  13 surgeries while pregnant.  Healthy son.   Since April 2001 have had 37 surgeries, mostly for Abscess/Fistulas. 3 muscle flap surgeries (both legs and the abdomin) Colon and Rectum removed when son was 8 weeks old.   Symptom AND med Free since final muscle flap surgery in 2004!!!

Hi Red,

I took MTX for many months for Connective Tissue inflammation (Lupus?). I was taking 15 mg once a week and then increased it to 20.

I was instructed to make sure and take folic acid every day (can't remember the amount, but it was more than 1 pill). I was really scared of the MTX and cleaned my bathroom really well before my first dose. Ha haaaa

No nausea at all. I was a bit sleepy the day or two after my weekly dose and I made sure to take it just before bed so I would sleep through anything weird.

Lots of folks at the Lupus and Chron's forum use MTX and it seems to help a lot. I found that my fatigue lifted with the MTX too. It does take several weeks to really kick in though.

You can choose which day of the week you take it . . . I chose a Friday evening so by Monday I was back to "normal".

Hope this helps!!

Blessings!

Hi Redsoxfan,
I've been taking MTX now for 3 years, 25mg orally.
I take it Thursday nights and like Rosie and Lyn I also take folic acid.
My main side effects are sun sensitivity (great when I live in Australia - sunny all year long!) and hair loss (the prednisone does'nt help with this either).
It did take a good 4 months plus to kick in so when you do start - be patient, also I have blood tests every 6 weeks to monitor liver function etc.
Good luck and keep us posted on how you go.

And check out the new meds thread - lots of good advice there.

I hope this brings you some relief. It must be upsetting to have symptoms again after being well for so long.

There is also a thread on the arthritis board "anyone starting methotrexate-I'm scared" That is about ten people chronicalling their first weeks on methotrexate.
I have been on it about 12 weeks now I take 15 mgs orally. Do take the folic acid-my rhuemy initially prescribed 1mg per day but we quickly upped it to 3mgs daily to get rid of the side effects. I too had no nausia or other GI effects just fatigue. I am one of the people who can't take NSAIDS with mtx but of cource we did not know that until after I had the bad reaction. Since going off the NSAID and upping the folic acid I must say I have had no side effects at all and after week 8 was able to taper Prednisone and am now off of Pred completely and in no pain at all-no swollen joints.
I was scared to start this drug but am very glad I did.
